Hello everyone,

Bit of an atypical question- but does anyone know of which programs that don't have a 24-hour call schedule throughout the 4 years? Any program- university/community, east/west- trying to get a rough list of such programs. If anyone knows of or is at such a program, please let me know.

Thank you 🙂

Do you mean programs that don't have any calls that last 24 hours? Because if that is what you mean, add UPMC/WPIC to your list.

So you want a list of programs that use any type of call system OTHER than rotating 24-hour call? (e.g. night float, evening float, etc...) - Or are you looking for straight up no overnights whatsoever?

FWIW, the presence of rotating 24-hour call schedules might increase in the near future. ACGME might get rid of the restriction that prevents interns from working for 24 hours in a row, in which case some programs might get rid of night float, at least for intern year.

Yes, any other call than 24-hours straight (due to certain health reasons).. night float is completely fine.. overnights are okay too..

And yes, I heard about that new potential change.. ://

To clarify, when some people mention "overnight," they mean working an overnight shift after your usual day shift... which is basically a 24 with maybe time for a nap in between.

I thought I would prefer 24s to certain other things, but in practice busy 24's absolutely suck.

People probably aren't listing programs because a) There are lots of programs, b) No one person knows anything about call specifics beyond programs they interviewed at or attend, and c) Call schedules can change from year to year

I can only think of one program I interviewed at this season that had absolutely no 24-hour shifts - the University of Rochester. I'm pretty sure almost every other program had at least one year that included some 24-hour calls.

I think your best bet is to just look at individual program websites and interview review threads from previous years.

Agreed. I was mainly looking to reach out to people who are Currently in such programs that don't have 24 hours straight or some option to circumvent it; otherwise, I am looking through individual websites in attempt to get the most up-to-date info

Details about call were very important to me, too. What I learned is that, even at my home program, there's always something you miss in terms of the specifics surrounding call. I was trying to avoid home call and yet somehow missed the part where we cover Friday night - Monday morning home call in PGY4...

Every program in California I know of in California has moved to a night float system. I don't think any of them had 24-hour call. However, at UCLA-Semel you have to have your pager on you at all times (yuck). UC Riverside and San Mateo has no call all 4 years.

I don't recall seeing any program with 24-hour call like I did on the east coast (CHA, MGH, Columbia, NYU, BIDMC), but even then some of the call was backup call and you get paid for it ($200 per consult at a few programs).

as loathe as I am to respond to this ridiculous thread, I just want to point out that nightfloat and 24hr call are not mutually exclusive and that UCLA and UCSF do have 24hr call.

I went back on their websites and yes you're right. UCSF has 24- calls in PGY2 (6 of them) and PGY3 (3 of them). UCLA has 24-hour calls in PGY2.
