It all depends on where you are practicing and what type of vet med you will be doing (i.e. small animal, large animal, mixed, exotics etc...). I have heard of people graduating and getting jobs making just over $40K thier first few years while others at more up-scale practices start their first year out at $65K plus benefits with a 10-15% raise after their first year. Another thing to consider is whether you are willing to work for a practice or a corporation. If you did ER medicine, you could make over $100K, although I'm not sure if you need to specialize or not.

I used to think vets got peanuts but I learned (though a modest bit of research ) that this is not always the case.

The starting salaries are usually lower than a pharmacist but there is more room to increase the salary depending on talents, efforts, acquiring one's own practice etc. A vet I shadowed said he earns far more than the avg. Rx and said he knows of some doctors who make less than some vets.

Apparently further study in a specialization can bump the salary up a lot...even into the millions (though I assume this is rare)

In contrast a pharamcist is usually capped at around 100k no matter how many years they work.
