Hello,

I am 27 years old and applying this year for fall 2012 admission.

In the past few years, I haven't done many extracurriculars per se, because I was working full time in an IVF laboratory and going to school to fulfill prereqs at night.

During college, I didn't do many things related to science as extracurriculars either, though I majored in Biology. I was in Karate Club and Knitting Club, as well as Crew for a bit.

Will this significantly affect my chances of getting into dental school? Or will it burn a gaping hole in my application?

Background: since college (graduated 2006), I worked in an academic lab and received acknowledgements in a paper, and then in the clinical lab in which I currently work. I also hiked the entire Appalachian Trail.

Also, I've shadowed four dentists for 32 hours total, and have a publication from my honors work senior year. GPA=3.4, Science=3.3.

I just took the ADA practice and got 21 on everything. I'm scheduled to take the DAT on August 30, which is late, but I feel I will use the time effectively to improve my score.

I'm posting because I have nobody to ask about how I will be assessed.:scared:

Being older I don't know any people who are applying/have applied to dental school!

Thoughts?

Thank you advance!😀

I hear schools appreciate older applicants, as they often have more to offer in the way of life experiences and maturity.

I wouldn't worry too much. I am sure your work experience and hike of the App. trail will come up as interview topics. As well as the normal why you want to be a dentist type of thing.
