Hello...

I'm looking at school lists, trying to get my ducks in a row for sending in my AMCAS/AACOMAS applications SOON. 🙂

My stats:
MCAT: 29R (2nd time), 25R (first time) The 29 is broken down as: 10 VR, 8 PS, 11 BS.
Overall GPA: 3.8
Science GPA: 3.7
Strong extracurricular background with multiple leadership experiences
Strong research background (3 self-made, run projects...great letter of reference from advisor, able to easily explain).
Strong healthcare background (worked for over a year as a CNA in a retirement home, became part of the leadership team...)
Strong letters of reference.

So, first, do I have a good chance? How does this all look? I'm looking to get into an MD/PhD program, because of my secondary passion for research.

Here are the MD schools I'm looking at:

Tufts (Boston, MA)
Wake Forest (Winston-Salem, NC)
Case Western (Cleveland, OH)
U of Nebraska (Omaha, NE)
UoI (Iowa City, IA)
Medical College of Wisconsin (Milwaukee,WI)

Here are the DO schools I'm looking at:
Des Moines University (Des Moines, IA)
Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, PA
University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine, ME

Help? Please? 🙂 Thanks in advance!

I don't know about MD/PhD programs because I'm a regular MD student but either way....You need more schools on that list.

Add in Chicago schools like:
1. University of Illinois
2. Rush
3. Loyola
4. Rosalind Franklin

DO: Midwestern

Consider other schools like:
New York Medical College

You need some backup schools.
I think Case Western, Wake Forest, Tufts are all "reach" schools for you.

I would apply to at least 15 schools to ensure you don't need a second round. :luck:

Expand your list and you have a shot of an acceptance somewhere MD/DO however MD/PhD programs are extremely competitive and your MCAT is low for those. Also, they prefer applicants with publications (you didn't list any). Good luck.

Friend of mine applying MD/PhD had a 4.0, two 1st name physiology publications and a 39S MCAT and only got into 1 MD/PhD program at a state school and was a URM. His application was stellar. He got into a bunch of MD programs and is at WashU now. Just wanted to give you an example of HOW EXTREMELY competitive MD/PhD programs are. Don't be disheartened though, many physicians do research without a PhD every day and publish often.

Thank you both so much!
I'm considering those Chicago schools now. I had a feeling that I was a bit light on the MD schools.

Any other advice at this point?

With your 3.8/29, schools I'd think you'd have a good shot at for MD-only would be:

UIllinois, Wayne, Buffalo, Toledo, Drexel, Temple, Vermont, VCU, Virginia Tech Carilion (new),
GWU, FIU, Louisville, Tulane, NYMC, MUSC, SCarolina, EVMS,
Rush, MichiganState, Oakland (new),

You are my MCAT/GPA twin.. lol I even got the same first time MCAT score as you.. I applied very late last year (Oct. Primary, Nov/Dec Secondaries) and got three interviews but sadly all waitlists and no acceptances.. I am hoping that I will have better luck this year by applying early and broadly.
