I need to raise my science GPA, and because i already completed 95 percent of the prereqs, an informal postbacc is the best option for me.

i've tried the open university system of the Cal States, but it is difficult to get into a class if you are not formally enrolled as a student.

if i seek a 2nd bachelor's, i can formally enroll in the cal state, allowing me better access to upper div biology courses.

does anyone on here have experiences with 2nd bachelor's offered through cal states? i dont need to actually complete all the courses for my second bachelors; i just need one year of full time student status so I can have access to the courses. i guess ultimately, is there a way for me to just shell out $8,000 tuition and be able to enroll in a cal state for a year?

My brother tried to get into SJSU for a second BS in EE a few times and he's only heard crickets so I think you might have a difficult time going that route. Pretty sure right now they're just trying to get their normal students through as well as they can with shrinking budget for classes. Have you tried sucking it up and doing the classes at the crappy times? Might be your best bet.

what do you mean classes at the crappy times? night classes? and i don't need a 2nd bachelors, just a way to enroll for 2 semesters and take some courses

Last I checked, NO CSU's and very few UC's are accepting apps for 2nd bac students due to the budget cuts. You'll have to get accepted into a grad program. Open U is a lost cause for upper divs. Many matriculated undergrads can't even get into them since they're rarely offered these days. Your best shot is an MS at the CSU's...

thanks for the info.

unfortunately, i dont think i can get into cal state master's/graduate programs because those programs require an undergraduate degree in the sciences (aka bio masters requires bio degree); i majored in a humanities field, so i don't have any degrees in the sciences.

any other options? if push comes to shove, i am going to have to resort to community colleges

Actually, I'm matriculated as an MA student at a CSU but I've been taking all my upper division courses anyway (shhhhhhh!). I majored in English in my undergrad so I couldn't get into any MS programs either. But I'm not blocked from registering into any science courses AND I have priority so I ALWAYS get in. No one has kicked me out or told me stop just yet. I almost have the equivalent of a BS in Bio from all the maneuvering I've been doing! We'll see if they actually award me the degree in the end though. If a state school is your goal, I would recommend doing something like this. And then work the hell out of the system while you still can!

I also have a friend who is registered as a 2nd bac pre-nursing student. Some CSUs are accepting students if they're pre-nursing. She's working on all her pre-reqs for med school as "pre-nursing." I would recommend doing something like this too!

CSUEB, SFSU, and CSULA all have post bacc programs for pre med students who need to raise their gpa. They have dedicated classes for postbaccs only so you'll have no trouble getting into classes. And the programs take about a year to complete

only CSULA can be considered due to its relative proximity to san diego. but that postbacc requires completion of all pre-reqs and cell bio WITH lab. i dont have cell bio, or physics 2, so i dont think i qualify

what's your MA program in? English? dont you at least have to take SOME classes towards your masters?

also, do you have to take the GRE?

I have been taking coursework for my masters while doing all the extra science courses. I've managed to just take one a quarter for 4 units. The other 18 units I'm allowed to take have all been science classes.

I didn't have to take the GRE to get into my program. I do plan on finishing too. It's only a 48 unit program.
