how necessary do you guys think these are? And how late into January do you think it'll help/will it even help at all to secure our number 1 choice?

I ask because it'd be a big expense to travel back to my top choice but 1) I'd be really stoked on spending a day there and 2) I don't want to not do this and not rank as highly there...

Thoughts?

Funny you mention this. I just made the decision not to go for similar reasons. I already have 2 interviews scheduled the same month and it's during my senior AI in medicine. Also, like you said, travel costs are too much.

As to its strategic importance, idk. Seems like one of those things that would be left out of their basic ranking schematic simply because not every one goes. Could it sway you up a few ranks if you tell the funniest jokes, are extremely attractive, and are an absorbingly interesting storyteller. Seems that would be reasonable. Otherwise highly speculative and perhaps most useful if you were trying to decide where to rank a program.

But what do I know. That's just my guess work.

Go for a second look if you truly need to see a program again. Otherwise it's completely unnecessary, shouldn't affect your ranking there, and is probably an inconvenience to the program to coordinate.

Completely unnecessary if you're just trying to demonstrate your love for a program that you already like.

The only reason to do it is if there is some information that you just couldn't get on your first visit or a subsequent email/call, i.e. something that you NEED to make up your mind.

2nd look is really only for helping you make your decision. You should really have something specific in mind you want to see or a specific person you want to talk to if you do a second look. You won't help your ranking by doing one. If anything it's another opportunity to say something wrong to the wrong person.

It can be mildly mildly helpful to learn more about a program. Even that is questionable. It won't improve your status in the ROL, though. Definitely DO NOT feel at all pressured to go.
