How important are second looks to certain programs? Some people during my respective interview days stated that they did not care whether you came back for a second look "it was an option to help you decide". In other words it would not change your ranking.

Of course it is in place to help you decide but I also heard a few grumblings about how it helped show your interest and might help at certain hospitals.

Any thoughts/comments/ideas.

Thanks in advance.

most programs I have been to stated that they get together and go through their rankings that same day you interviewed and that 2nd looks should serve the appilcicant and will not have any bearing on the institution's rankings.

That being said, I do know of one program in the SE that states that anyone that they were seriously considering that has taken a 2nd look in the past, had always been ranked to match.

In other words, I would only take a 2nd look if you wanted to get a better feel for the program. If you really want to go to a certain program, I would notify the Residency Director/Program Director that they were your #1 choice.

Any more love on second looks....

Just a little...

I would just say to listen to what the program has to say and do that (if you are seriously considering the program/it isn't too far away/whatever). Or if you truly do want to go there and do a second look and it's your first choice/whatever, then give them a call and start asking about it. Ask if you could come down and do it, if they encourage it (if you don't know already), and if THEY think that it would help your standing any (key point).

Whoever sets up the day for those who come likely has talked with someone who will be making the decisions (if not themselves) and can say yes (you should go in this case) or no that it will help your standing. If they say no, or you don't need to, then you've got an answer that can likely mean one of two things:

1.) They like you alot and you are already being ranked highly
2.) They didn't think a lot of you, and some extra force-feeding isn't going to help your status any

Either way, you'll know what you should do and that they've made up their mind one way or the other about you. I would definitely talk to them before you reflexly set something up. Hopefully things work out for you. Good luck.

I would definitely wait for an invite. If you express interest in the program and get invited back, it's generally a pretty good sign.
