I brought my gpa from 2.4 to a 3.1. My brother passed away my freshman year which lead to me failing some classes. Mcat is a 32 and O on the writing. I have some shadowing and I have worked part time as an EMT for the past 2 years. Should I even apply? Or do a SMP? MD or DO? Any advice is welcome.

I would apply to both MD (broadly & state schools) as well as DO. If you are fine being a DO they have grade replacement which could boost your gpa.

I'd apply broadly for DO if you are looking at this cycle. If you have money to burn you could try MD next cycle but I'd say its pretty unlikely.

Would I be able to apply the disadvantage student because of family issues and house hold income <20,000 ? If so how much would this help me?

Very sorry to hear of your troubles. Your numbers are fine for DO programs, but I see no hope for MD.

Sorry to hear of your troubles, OP.

I think Goro is referring to there being little hope for MD this cycle.

An SMP/post-bacc is a viable route for you. Your MCAT is solid; it's the GPA holding you back. Do you have an upward trend? Are you confident in your ability to get a 4.0 with a 16+ credits/semester schedule?

If so, buckle up for the long bumpy ride. While you're at it, volunteerism / shadowing / clinical experience also need to be expanded upon.If you do well, both MD and DO may be within your sights.

I've been through a similar experience, and can understand the affect of a loss on your academics. Unfortunately, I'm not sure MD schools are as forgiving, but we can hope, right? I am in a similar boat as you are. If you do not wish to do an SMP or post-bacc, apply broadly and realistically to both MD and DO as early as possible next cycle and hope for the best. Otherwise, GPA repair through one of those options can open many more doors for you. Good luck OP, to both of us!
