Hello so I have been making my MD list and was wondering if I could get some advice. I originally was going to apply DO only but then I received the Fee Assistance Program so figured might as well throw my hat in the ring. Will only apply to the 16 free though so I can use my money for DO.

Me:
White male from California
Economically Disadvantaged, was on federal and state programs in high school and college
History Major
3.4 cumulative gpa; 3.17 science gpa, 513 MCAT (126/129/129/129)
Bad stuff: retook calc 2 and went from a C- to a C+; retook organic 2 and 3 (quarter system) and went from C- to B- and D to C+. Got good grades in CC then mediocre in top three public school.

LOR

2 science, 1 history (two great one average)
MD Ph D who I did clinical research under (outstanding letter)
MD who I worked with, trying to publish with, and shadowed
DO who I shadowed
Collegiate Coach

Experience
Clinical Research (paid): 5000 hours (over the course of three years). Worked on a drug from screening to FDA approval. Basically had the unique opportunity to be a CRC as an undergrad. Also worked on two other studies, presented all of them as poster presentations including one at a department of medicine poster day. Also by second year was the most experienced undergraduate and trained roughly 30 undergraduates over the next year or so.

Collegiate Athletics (community college): two years.

Tutoring(volunteer): 60 hours

Undergrad Club: One of the founders, three years as the president. Multifaceted club that got undergraduates involved in clinical research, had talks from health care professionals, and did A LOT of community outreach including organizing talks in the community by physicians and other health care professionals. Probably 600 hours of outreach over three years.

Publication: Working on a case report to publish with a doctor, will hopefully be submitted for publication by end of July.

Shadowing: 200 MD/Ph D; 150 MD, 60 DO.

Special Olympics Coach (1 year only): 60 hours.

Summer job: 500 hours over two summers.

Schools (and I am not 100% attached to any of these)
Rosalind Franklin
Albany
New Yor Medical College
Creighton
Drexel
Quinnipiac
Meharry
Rush
Tulane
UC Davis
Virginia Tech
Wake Forest
Charles Drew
Stritch
Marshall
Cal North State

(sorry about the long post but any help would be greatly appreciated!)

I would sub in/think about: Wayne State and Geisinger

DO you have any clinical experience thats not from shadowing or research? Like working with patients?

In my clinical research I would perform EKGs and take vitals of patients. I interacted a lot with patients during my clinical research and recorded concomitant medications, adverse events, serious adverse events, as well as study specific procedures. I also have done vitals in the community during outreach events. Outside of these I have not done any other clinical experiences.

Cal State Northridge has a Med School now? 😵 When did that happen? 😕

GPA is really bad but MCAT is great! DO would have some shots for you. I’m not sure about MD though unless you were non-traditional or something. The GPA is just so low. EC’s are excellent.

Definitely feel like I over stretched myself as and undergrad looking back and couldn't study as much as was required for my university. I probably should have applied to an SMP but didn't realize until too late. Will apply to them at the beginning of their cycles next year if this cycle goes poorly.

You can definitely become a doctor. Go DO and apply broadly - you will probably get lots of love! It is okay to not live a perfect life, you just have to keep pushing forward. I am a third year med student now and I started my undergrad with a 1.0 GPA so I completely understand.

Definitely going to apply broad and hope someone gives me the chance. My realistic goal is to go DO and work hard to try and place into a good residency now. Thanks for the motivation!

Are you aware that Northstate has chosen to deny its students access to federally insured loans and payback mechanisms?
I was not. That is very useful. Thank you.

GPAs are lethal for MD schools. You're fine for any DO school.
I can't recommend Touro-NY, Nova, Wm Carey, LUCOM, for different reasons. MSUCOM? Read up on Larry Nasser and you decide.

My biggest concern for DO is that since they don't include math my sgpa for them is a mere 3.07. I was looking to apply to these programs:

MWU/CCOM
ATSU-SOMA
MWU/AZCOM
ARCOM
BCOM
Blacksburg VCOM
Idaho College (ICOM)
Kansas City (KCU-COM)
NYITCOM
Philadelphia (PCOM)
Touro NV
Touro CA
UIWSOM
Western
Marian
Possibly OUCOM since I will be working in Ohio during my gap year.
edit: also possibly RVUcom after doing some research in school forum.

Would you (or anyone) suggest possibly doing a SMP concurrently with my application cycle if I can get in at this point?
