Hello,

My stats are:
3.24 cumulative GPA (science is around 3.2)
32N MCAT
-1.5 years medical assistant at pediatrician's office
-over a year volunteering/interning in hospital (+leadership position in program)
-1.5 years choir
-1 year pre-med sorority

I am applying to both allopathic and osteopathic schools. I think my MCAT score will make me a competitive applicant for D.O. schools, but I don't think I have a very good shotat M.D. schools. Do you think I have a chance at any allopathic schools? I am from California so most likely I will be applying out of state.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

As an out of state applicant with 3.24 GPA, I think you are hosed for allopathic schools, unless perhaps you are a minority student.
You can probably get into a DO school right now, with your clinical work and MCAT score...but better ask some DO students...I'm not sure.

If you did a postbac or something and pulled up the GPA, you might be able to get into a MD school @some point but I think it would take a while.

Your stats are definitely good for DO schools. Look up schools you want to apply to and apply early. There are two DO schools in california. Also, does your GPA have an upward trend the last two years? If so, you'll be okay. It's better to have struggled in the first years of college and shwo a strong upward trend, than the opposite.

Not really, I changed my major around a lot, and I didn't really commit to med school until my junior year. Then I joined a bunch of extracurriculars and started taking upper division classes and it was hard to balance and get good grades. I had kind of sporadic grades my first two years (from 2.8 to 3.6) then it started to average around 3.25. Is that bad?

I think you're good for DO schools but probably won't see an MD acceptance unless you're an URM. Give it a shot though, apply to schools like the SUNYs, Tulane, GW, NYMC, SLU, etc. Just don't forget to apply DO as well.

Just to put the GPA into perspective.. the average matriculant (meaning, person who was accepted) to an allopathic medical school has a cumulative GPA between 3.65 and 3.7.
