Hi,

New to SDN and could use some advice relating to my chances getting into MD schools.

Graduated Wesleyan University 3.4cGPA, 3.5sGPA
MCAT - 12 P, 9 B, 7 V, P Writing
Research Technician in breast cancer/endocrine disruption for 2 years at Tufts Medical School in Boston
Several letters of rec, 2 weeks of volunteer works in Dominican Republic last year, 50+ hours of shadowing ER physicians and co-author on a research paper being published now.
Took 2 additional classes, Biochemistry and Anatomy & Physio at Havard this past year and got an A- and A in both, respectively.

I applied to NY Medical College last year in hoping legacy would give me a step up (my father attended), and I am currently still waitlisted hoping to hear back soon.

I'd really like some advice as to what schools I would have a chance at. 2011 MSAR helps somewhat, but any advice on these forums would be appreciated.

I'm thinking about holding off on this round of applications and taking another year to add some more volunteer work, take some more classes and try to score over a 30Q on MCAT. I know the GPA is low and so is the MCAT (especially writing 🙁)

Thanks

Retake the MCAT. Shoot for as high as possible.

Yeah definitely retaking the MCAT and going to try to get into a steady volunteer program. Forgot to mention I'm a NY state resident. Is there comprehensive ranking of NY schools that anyone knows of? Aside of the MSAR, can't seem to find anything substantial.

Thanks

Suggest the low-tier MD schools only, and perhaps NYCOM.

Thanks for the input, could you suggest some low-tier medical schools? I was thinking some of the SUNY schools, but even some of their standards for gpa/mcat are higher than what I'm pulling.

Just because your stats are lower than the averages doesn't mean you shouldn't apply. If you have above average ECs, they can make up for slightly below average stats. Your stats are lower than the NYMC "standards" and you still got an interview. I would agree that you should retake the MCAT. Any score in the 32-35 range and you should be in good shape. If you apply this cycle, I would apply to all NY schools, both private and public.

You have almost no chance for MD admissions with a 7 subscore and below average gpa. Retake the mcat
