Hi all, I'm a recent UT grad, AA female Texas resident and I'm wondering what are my chances? I have a 3.4 cumulative GPA and 3.0 sGPA with strong upward trend...I think with my GPA I need to just stick to Texas schools and be happy if I get an acceptance, but I'm getting all these emails from upper tier schools encouraging me to apply based on my MCAT scores. My mother (who's a pediatrician) of course thinks I'm Harvard and Hopkins material and they're "basically giving me a spot" when I think in reality they send those emails to everyone who signs up for the MEDMAR when they take the MCAT. I have decent ECs and LORs and I am a pretty good interviewer. Also I should note I am a reapplicant, I applied last year with a mid 20s MCAT, got one interview and was wait listed. I retook and now I'm applying with a 31. So...should I just stick to the Texas schools or spend money and apply to all these upper tier schools emailing me about applying and increasing their diversity? Any response will be appreciated!

I definitely think you should stick to mostly UT schools and apply for maybe 1-2 of the upper tier schools! Usually they just encourage people to apply to get more money but at the same time you do have a slight chance of getting in so it's worth a job! Definitely not something you should feel too confident and apply to like 20 upper tier schools. Keep it realistic. The stats don't lie

Stick with TX. HBCs are fine as well, and maybe a few schools outside the state.

UT student here too. If you don't mind me asking, which school were you interviewed/waitlisted at? I currently have a 3.4 cumulative/3.2 science (taking MCAT next spring) with an upward trend. Would love to go to UT-Houston, but not sure if my stats are up to par.

I interviewed at UT Houston actually! I have a friend who also went to UT who got into UT houston with a 3.2 cGPA and sGPA with a 30 MCAT so assuming you do well on your mcat you'll be fine. If I got an interview with a 3.4 and a 25 then as long as you do well on your MCAT I think UT Houston is within reach.

That's good to know! What do you think made them interview you and not any other schools? Did you gear your application towards them? UT-Houston is definitely the school I'd like to go to most, so I hope it works out!

Frankly I don't know. At my interview they told me that my application wasn't complete so that's why the other schools probably wouldn't interview me but houston would give me a chance anyway. Plus honestly I was a good applicant besides my MCAT score. This cycle will prove to be more fruitful I'm thinking though. Best of luck to you! @hornstudent

Awesome! Thanks! Did they talk to you about coming from UT? I feel like they may be a little more forgiving because they understand UT is difficult, but I'm not too sure if that's the case. Also, did you apply really early? I think that'll give me a leg up. Sorry for all the questions, but I guess that's what this is for, right?
