Hello SDN,

I am in need of some guidance and your feedback would be greatly appreciated.
Currently, I am a 19 year-old male student and in-state resident at one of the top 50 universities for Academic Rankings of World Universities (for what that's worth). I'm majoring in Biochemistry and will be applying to medical school this summer (really no preference to MD/DO).

Campus Pre-Med Club/Organization, Member

I'm planning on retaking the MCAT again this March to get a better score. Next semester I am also taking a majority of bio classes to raise that science GPA. Something I'm really lacking is research, I have a position set up next semester with a professor to conduct research about 15 hrs/week which will extend for at least a full year.
With that, please leave any negative/positive feedback. I am looking to strengthen and hone my weaknesses and highlight my strengths.
From this thread, I am hoping to gain a little more insight on where I stand as a whole, where and how I can improve, as well as your thoughts in general.

Thank you SDN.

Your cGPA is below avg for MD schools but fine for DO. The sGPA is not competitive for the former, but OK for the latter. If your MCAT score is 25 or higher, then for DO programs there's no need to retake. If lower than 24, then a re-take is in order, and aim for high 20s /low 30s.

You look good for DO with a 30 MCAT and your grades. One thing to think about for next semester (when you wanted to take more bio) is whether or not you want to retake your "Bio 1". If you do, you could significantly raise your AACOMAS sGPA.

You would certainly get a couple of MD interviews if you apply smartly and perhaps raise your MCAT a few points. However, if you truly have no preference, I'd say to focus your efforts on the DO path and save yourself a lot of time, money, and stress.

no chance for MD as is, but fine for nearly all DO schools.
