3.4 or 3.5 = harvard?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
how do people with 3.4s and 3.5s get into harvard? is it their ECs, PS's, or what?

They have their parents donate the $ for a new building.

Not really. There's a lot more that goes into admissions than just your GPA. But I'm sure you already know that.

Sad, but it does sound believable. 🙁

I can guarantee they have some friendly ties to the school. I know it sounds bad, and yeah maybe they got a stellar score on the DAT, have 10,000 hours of ECs...etc, but I think with 3.5 or less there has to be something else making them want to choose them.

they don't.

but why pay that much to become a dentist anyway? prestige?....:eyebrow:

I guess so. Think about, if you got accepted into Harvard DS but turned it down for Iowa University DS, you will always tell people I went to IU, but I got into Harvard.

No but seriously, it makes no sense to me.

< $$$ = 🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂

why pay so much? prestige? yea i think it helps..going to harvard does give u a much better chance of specializing than iowa...

oh and how do ppl get in with lousy gpas: bribery, affirmative action, race, URM, socioeconomic status, and maybe KILLER dat scores or nontraditional applicants

prestige is going to help but in the most minuscule of ways. Going to harvard means that you'll take on an extremely heavy financial burden and if you plan on waiting 2-4 years to make a substantial income by doing a residency, you'd want the least amount of debt to pay off after you can start paying it. Remember residency's often pay very poorly and sometimes even costs the dentist money (taking the location into consideration).

Also, going to Harvard would put you in the same class with people who are more competitive and intelligent than those who go to iowa (and harvard has a smaller class size). Getting into the top 10% would be a lot more tough and that would result in a decreased chance at matching into any residency as only about 10% of all dental student are accepted into a specialty program.

I dont think they care about URM. I dont have my ADEA book w/ me, but im pretty sure there weren't many...if at all

um i don't think they need to be top 10% to get into a specialty program if ur from harvard...or columbia...from what i hear lol

more like top 90% =P

nope.

and nope!!!

i interviewed at Harvard this cycle with a 3.49 cumulative. supertank is right = there's a lot that goes into an app than a GPA. 😎

hmmm. harvard sdm had one of the most diverse student bodies i've ever seen.

I know some of students get into harvard with low (?) gpa and dat score, but I thought that Harvard cares about other things (i don't know exactly) besides grades.. cuz their DAT score is not significantly higher than other d-schools, so I thought a person with some special stuff that other applicants don't get into Harvard with low GPA and DAT. I might be wrong.....

btw, whats URM anyway? ethnic diversity?

URM = under represented minority.

i just ask because i'd kill to go to harvard/columbia/penn for dental school and have literally spent hours looking at predents and they all have a bunch of students coming in who have 3.4s and 3.5s, some with not stellar DAT scores, too. i'm not sure why some people are saying "they don't" because they do... so what is it? i know gpa/dat aren't the ONLY things. i can write a really good PS, so that's cool, and i'd say my ECs are pretty unique as well. what else?

like preomfs, looking at your predents, people would probably say that your gpa is on the low end but you have amazing dat scores. congrats on getting in! so is it really just numbers and either/or, but ideally both?

Why? Nobody cares if you went to harvard or stony brook. Its if your patients are happy about your work you did on them.
You need to set yourself apart from all the other applicants. You need to be different, obiviously gpa & DATs but something else that will make them we want you!
Good Luck on getting into harvard.

HSDM favors certain people so much that they even get in with 3.4 or 3.5
On the other hand, they hate some people so much that they reject them with 4.0 gpa and 24 DAT. That's why they have a legal disclaimer on their website !

😛

how do people with 3.4s and 3.5s get into harvard? is it their ECs, PS's, or what?

Well, Harvard's class size is only 35 students, and their average GPA is nearly a 3.8, so it's probably safe to say that there's only a few students with 3.4-3.5 GPAs.

However, Harvard cares very much about diversity. Not just in terms of race/ethnicity or SES, but your story and who you are. They look for people who will fit in with their community and bring something different that other students can learn from. That's what I learned when I visited, so I'd guess your PS is very important.

doesn't have a lot to do with grades, they go ape tits for people who have overcome extreme adversity (but their grades are incredible to say the least most of the time). and they love people who have put out papers as an undergrad.

It's more than scores folks. Anyone with a 135+ IQ can lock themselves in a room and get 4.0s. They want to see that you have the drive to go out into the world and make change.
