Hey everyone, I know I am planning all of this fairly early, but I wanted some opinions on my chances at getting into a decent DO school. I currently have a 3.42 gpa, but I still need to take physics I, physics II, and retake gen chem II. I am currently planning on taking the MCAT in March and applying for schools in June. If I get a 30+ on the MCAT should I be fairly competitive? If not, what score(s) should put me in the ball park?

I should also mention that I graduated last year with a bachelors in Clinical Laboratory Science and I have been working at a VA hospital laboratory for a year now. I will have 100+ hours shadowing multiple DO's and 100+ hours volunteering on the surgery floor at the hospital where I work by the time June rolls around. I have also attended a few national meetings for my profession, and I have some clubs/organizational experience from the last few years. My biggest concern is the fact that I am basically cramming all of my volunteer/shadowing experience into a shorter period of time than most, but some advisors that I have talked to have said that I can easily explain that in my personal statement.

My gpa has been significantly higher in the last 70 credit hours as well if that matters.

Thanks for everyone's help.

being that it is almost october and you didn't say you are currently taking physics 1, not sure how you think you are going to be ready for the mcat in march. You need to take all your prereqs before the MCAT. 30+ will definitely make you competitive for DO schools, but I don't see that happening without those classes.

other than that, you seem to be ok.

I am actually taking an 8 week night course for physics I that runs October 22nd-December 17th after which I will be focusing on studying for the MCAT. Sorry for the confusion there.

which is fine, however most of the physics on the mcat will likely be from physics 2 as waves, decay, nuclear reactions, yada yada are more commonly tested on the mcat. it is entirely your call, and what i say ultimately doesn't matter, but i cannot see a 30+ on the MCAT without physics 2. I am not saying it can't or hasn't been done, i just wouldn't rely on it. no idea how you are for self studying.
