Hey everyone! I will jump straight into the stats.

cGPA = 3.4
sGPA = 3.5
MCAT = 34
School = UVA Neuroscience major, Studio Art Minor

Extracurricular:
2.5 years of research and have been awarded 2 research grants
100 hours of clinical shadowing
Intramural volleyball captain (2 years) - 3rd place last year
Over 200 hours of all around volunteering, both medical and mostly non-medical - also helped train some volunteers and then became a program director for the group
TA for organic chemistry (both semesters)
Currently writing a DMP thesis
In the university honors program

My #1 school right now is VCU medical school because they have their 3rd and 4th years in Fairfax, which is fairly close to where I live. Other than that, UVA is another top option, but I feel as if my GPA is too low to even consider it.

Also looking for improvements to do during this year if I don't get in anywhere. Besides the GPA of course, I am looking for anything to help make me seem more unique and interesting to the applicant pool.

Thanks everyone!

I think you're a shoo in for VCU granted you are IS, don't mess up your interview/aren't a robot, and you already applied (early) this year. VCU interviews a bit less than half of IS and accept apx 1 in 4 of those interviewed.

I dont think being the IM captain holds much weight though but that's just me. My IM team won the school championship but I don't really think much of it...maybe its just me!

Oh wow that is great news to hear! I have just been feeling so down about GPA compared to what schools expect. Thank for the feedback!

And I actually have no idea about the captain thing, but I heard it is nice to put down anything sports related so the admissions people know we are not just study machines and that we actually go outside! So I thought it was worth it to include it, no harm done I assume.

I can't imagine neuroscience at UVa was an easy major, so don't feel down about your GPA! As far as making yourself more unique and interesting, you already seem to have plenty of research/medical activities.

Do you have any interests you've always wanted to pursue but haven't yet, perhaps something related to art, given your minor? Being able to articulate and demonstrate a passion of yours outside the medical field could go a long way toward making yourself stand out of the crowd, especially if it will help you become a better physician somehow.

As a fellow UVa grad and future medical school applicant, I wish you the best of luck with your applications!

Think you're fine for ALL VA schools, and then some.
