Just as mentioned, my cGPA is 3.57 with an sGPA of 3.54. What MCAT score do I need in order to be competitive for DO? Does my GPA fall under the average for DO schools?

ECs:

300 hours clinical volunteering
50 hours shadowing an FP who's a DO
100 hours tutoring for the homeless
2 years volunteering for charity organization
4 years president of a youth group

Do I need more ECs? More shadowing maybe? Thanks!

Just did a little research. DO entering class of 2013 had a mean sGPA of 3.27 and a mean cGPA of 3.54 so your GPA looks good as long as you apply broadly. The mean MCAT is a 26 (8.5PS, 8.5VR, 9BS).

What does this mean? Scoring an even 26+ will put you within the mean of matriculants this year. That will make you competitive for application next year (this cycle and probably the next). Although, the higher the MCAT score, the better your chances so STUDY! The test is beatable (after much sweat, blood, and tears in my experience).

If you are interested in MD, I don't think it is out of your range given a solid MCAT (33+). That is not to say that you shouldn't go DO if that's what you are interested in.

Interesting and definitely makes me feel a lot better. Did you get this from aacom?

Yes I did, just googled 'DO school admissions stats' and it was one of the first things to pop up. Honestly, your GPA isn't that far under the average for MD programs either if you were interested. I'm guessing you'd get a few looks with even a 30+ but I'm not entirely sure. DO or MD, who cares? We will all be doctors one day. For those who say that getting into competitive residencies is more difficult with a DO I'd like to point out that the current Chief Resident of Anesthesiology is a DO.

That is just one example but nevertheless, if DO is what you want then do DO!

Your numbers are close, but it more like 3.37sGPA, 3.48 cGPA and 26.7 MCAT for applicants who matriculated in 2013.

Thanks for the correction. I was reading the applicant profile for 2013. The matriculant profile for 2012 is: sGPA 3.39, cGPA 3.51, and a 27 MCAT.
