Hello,

As the title says I have a 3.594 GPA (hoping to get above a 3.6 this semester) and got a 522 MCAT (132/128/131/131). I am looking for help on what schools I should apply to, hoping to get between 15-25 good options. I'm currently a junior at OSU, and would absolutely love to get into OSU. My advisor says I probably only have ~70% chance due to a lack of non-clinical volunteering and extracurriculars. Here are my stats:

Cumulative GPA: 3.594 (Hoping to get this above 3.6 this semester, I averaged a 3.2 freshman year and a 3.8 for sophomore and Junior fall semester)
Science GPA: 3.59
MCAT Scores: 522 (132/128/131/131)
Research – I'm going to estimate ~1-2000 hours. No publications, unfortunately, but researched under the head of psychology for OSU for 2 years now. Researching schizophrenia using microdialysis.
Volunteering (clinical) – 140 Hours at Grant Hospital
Physician shadowing – 30 Hours - ~26 for neurosurgery (~5 of those for clinic days) and ~4 for orthopedic surgery. (Going to try to get 50 hours before I apply)
Non-clinical volunteering - Only 20 hours so far. Joined Camp Kesem over the summer (as a camp counselor for kids who have a parent with cancer), joined my neuroscience honorary and doing any volunteering opportunities I can for that.
Extracurricular activities - Very little, mostly just research, volunteering, my honorary.
Employment history - Nothing relevant, odd jobs as a bus boy/inventory management for my school.
Please include time span and weekly commitment for volunteering/research/shadowing/extracurriculars.
Research - 2 years, ~30 hours/week over the summer (50hr/week this summer), ~15 hr/week during school
Clinical volunteering - 1 year, 5hr/week initially, now 3hr/week
Nonclinical volunteering - Usually only 2-3 hr/week, with some opportunites
Immediate family members in medicine? No, I would be the first MD in my immediate family history
Specialty of interest - Neurosurgery, but I am keeping an open mind to all fields
Shadowing experience - Orthopedic surgery and Neurosurgery
Graduate degrees - None
Interest in rural health (y/n) - Open to the concept, so yes.
And here is my preliminary list of schools to apply:

In State:
Ohio State (#1 choice)
Case Western
Northeast Ohio Medical University
University of Toledo
University of Cincinatti
Wright State

Out of State
Albany Medical College
Boston University
Drexel University
Eastern Virginia
Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth
Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine
Georgetown University
Lewis Katz at Temple University
Loyola University
University of South Carolina
New York University
Thomas Jefferson University
Brown University
USF Health Morsani
University of Colorado
University of Michigan
University of Vermont
University of Washington
Virginia Commonwealth University
Virginia Tech
Wright State

Are there any schools that I should add/remove? (I really would rather go east coast or stay in Ohio, unless a fantastic opportunity comes)

You are competitive for almost everywhere except the tippy top. I would patch up the ECS for non clinical stuff and you should be good. I would remove brown from that list.

The issue that I see with your list is that you have a lot of OOS state schools at which your MCAT is above the 90th percentile. Most of those will favor in-state applicants, and see you as someone who is unlikely to matriculate due to your high MCAT. You've also included a lot of low yield schools that get tons of applications every year, and aren't necessarily looking for high-stat applicants. I agree with @libertyyne -- you're competitive most places, except perhaps the very top. You should work on boosting your ECs before applying, and get your GPA above 3.6. Then, my suggestion would be to apply to lots of mid tiers -- for out of state options, consider Einstein, Rochester, Emory, Mt Sinai, UMiami, UVA, UMich, and a handful of the lower top 20s. Case Western and Cleveland Clinic/Lerner are great in-state schools, and of course you should apply to the rest of your state schools as well. With a solid list, you should definitely get some interviews and acceptances!

Out of State
Albany Medical College
Boston University -- Low yield
Drexel University
Eastern Virginia
Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth
Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine
Georgetown University -- Low yield, they get tons of applications
Lewis Katz at Temple University -- Low yield, they get tons of applications
Loyola University
University of South Carolina -- They barely accept any OOS applicants according to the MSAR
New York University
Thomas Jefferson University
Brown University -- Low yield, they mostly take their own undergrads
USF Health Morsani
University of Colorado
University of Michigan
University of Vermont
University of Washington -- They don't accept OOS, except a few (think like 3 students) with strong state ties and/or URM status
Virginia Commonwealth University
Virginia Tech
Wright State

Been volunteering at the soup kitchen for 1yr.
volunteering at the hospital intermediate unit 6 months

I'm applying to all the state schools, but don't know what OOS schools I would be an attractive candidate too. Could you suggest any?

Thank you guys!!!

Are you in the same boat as OP in that you retook the MCAT and received a much higher score????

Well not in the same same boat, I just have a great GPA but a low MCAT which the GPA shows a constant trend vs. the MCAT which is just an 8 hr exam. I am planning to retake the MCAT, but Im still going to apply this cycle. I've been calling around to different schools and they all do a "hollistic" review. Im keeping it real and I know I wont get in to the top tier schools so I wanted some input as to what school people consider "good"

I live in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida
Your best chances are your Florida schools so apply to all of them and include NOVA MD if it opens for 2018. For OOS schools you could try these:
Quinnipiac
New York Medical College
Drexel
Temple
Jefferson
George Washington
Georgetown
Oakland Beaumont
Rosalind Franklin
Loyola
St. Louis
Creighton

You really think I have a shot at these schools? I do have Loyola, Oakland and St. Louis + all the state schools on my list but the ones you suggest I see on the MSAR that the lowest MCAT they have matriculated students with range between 505 - 507. NOVA MD, unfortunately, will not be open for this cycle. I

Yes, you are Hispanic URM and many of the cities where those schools are located have large Hispanic patient populations.

thank you for the info. I will definitely do my homework on these schools!!

If anyone else would like to suggest any OOS schools, please do so, I am open to any and all suggestions. Thanks!!
