Hi,

I am wondering about my chances at top research schools (Baylor, UChicago, NU, Pitt, Case, Stanford)? I think I am strong in the research, but unimpressive in other areas. Can research outweigh my weaknesses? Thanks

3.60 cgpa, 3.60sgpa, 35N (10V, 12P, 13B), MPH

Research (unrelated to MPH):
I have 2 first author pubs, 2 poster presentations at 5 conferences, and 2 second author abstracts at an international conference. 2 years full time in one lab, 9 months part time in another.

Other ECs:
short but high quality hospital volunteering
sufficient shadowing
a couple whatever awards, etc.
minimal non-clinical volunteering

thanks for the input SDNers

Your MCAT score is very nice, but your GPA is below the median for those accepted to allo schools. All of those schools are a bit reachy for your stats, less so for Case. I see you as more in the range of:
Emory
Dartmouth
NYU
Ohio State
Boston
Tufts
Einstein
Rochester, etc.

Having such sparse ECs doesn't exactly scream out that you've had medicne as a goal for a prolonged period of time and have tested it as a vocation through multiple activities. Your research is terrific, but you obviously haven't made humanistic activities and leadership a priority during the college years (which top schools like to see).

You might consider applying as an MD/PhD candidate where ECs aside from research aren't deemed as important as they are for straight-MD programs.

Thanks for the list of additional schools. I had Rochester, Ive also got Creighton, Loyola, SLU, Rush, OHSU, UIC, MedCo Wisco.

How about George Wash, Gtown, Rosalind Franklin...?

I really dont want to do MD/PHD, simply b/c Ive allready taken a few years after undergrad to get an MPH and do research. I think an MD has similar research opportunities anyhow.

The problem is that I think I fall into no-man's-land, in that the schools that would consider me for my mcat would not care about my research, and the schools that care about my research would not consider me b/c of lacking in other areas (gpa, no major leadership, etc.)

Which state are you a resident of?
