hello! wondering if someone could possibly provide feedback on my chances at MD schools/advice on retaking MCAT.

- CA Resident
- 3.64 GPA
- 512 MCAT (hoping to retake by April and reach 518)
- extracurriculars include
- 2 years shadowing (1x a week)
- 2 years clinical volunteering
- 1 year research in both wet lab/clinical setting
- public health internship (1 summer)
- tutor/involved in university clubs

thanks in advance 🙂

Your MCAT is roughly equivalent to a 32 on the old scale (via LizzyM) this is a good score and not one I'd retake in a hurry. A 518 would be an amazing score but no NECESSARY to get into school.

I would use MSAR and think about where you want to go to school but your stats and ECs seem fine to me

Edit: Apply early and broadly and you should be fine for most programs

Honestly you look fine to me. I would advise against retaking that MCAT; it's a good score and retaking is dangerous unless you are basically POSITIVE that you will improve it significantly. Just don't make your school list unrealistic/too top-heavy and you should be good!

Do I need to reach through the electrons and smack you upside the head???

Retaking that perfectly fine score is an act of hubris.

Your chances are fine with these schools:
U VM
USF Morsani (maybe)
Duke (maybe)
Case (maybe)
Both Mayos (maybe)
Miami
St. Louis
Albany
Albert Einstein
Rochester
Rush (note: very service/experience oriented with a 150hr service requirement. Avg student has 800 hours of community service, and >1800 hours of health care exposure.)
Rosy Franklin
BU
MCW
Hofstra
NYMC
VCU
EVMS
Wake Forest
Jefferson
Temple
Drexel
Creighton
George Washington
Emory
USC/Keck
Tulane
Dartmouth
Loyola
Oakland-B
Western MI
UCD
UCI
UCR IF you're from the Inland Empire.
Uniformed Services University/Hebert (just be aware of the military service commitment)
Any DO program, starting with PacNW, Western, TUNCOM, and Touro-CA.

thank you all for the advice! 🙂 I know retaking is risky, but thought I should try because of a GPA that's on the lower end. also, being a CA resident + ORM made me even more worried haha. I took the MCAT and felt that I could have gotten a better score if I had spent more time on content review, so I guess I was hoping that if I took the time and really prepared for my retake, I could perform even better.

ideal school is anywhere in CA, but of course I would be happy to get in anywhere. thanks again to all of you for taking the time out to advise me!

Second everything.

I would probably forgo the DOs and do UA-T and Phx. This kid will be fine as long as their interview skills aren't trash

thank you! will add those to the list. and crossing my fingers my interview skills are decent lolol

Retaking a MCAT score that is in the 80 percentile is VERY risky...
thank you for your feedback! I wanted to retake, because like I had mentioned, my GPA is on the lower end. Also, my score for B/B was 126 (67th percentile.) Would that change your view on things, or would you still recommend not retaking?

No... It would only change my view if you wanted to get into a top 20 med school... If that is what you are aiming for, a retake might be justifiable. Otherwise, your stats are good enough to get into a US MD school.

Your cGPA is certainly below average, but it is NOT in the lower end of the spectrum...
