3.75 cGPA
3.67 sGPA
34 MCAT

2 years as a undergraduate tutor (job during college), good EC's (University Orchestra/Wind Ensemble, playing trumpet in small groups, in two clubs and heavily into weight lifting), 200+ hours of volunteering at a hospital, 60+ hours shadowing in an emergency room. No research experience.

Looking to apply to mid range-schools such as University of Washington, Tulane, Temple University, Tufts, etc.

What are my chances? I still have a year before I apply, so any advice would be welcome!

WWAMI only helps at UW. Have you bought the MSAR? UNC only matriculated 15/4057 OOS regular MD students, seems low yield to me.

I have not yet, I'm planning on switching out schools on my list if they have a low OOS yield. So then I will not apply to UNC! How do my stats look for mid range schools though? Anything I can improve upon in a year?

Lack of research will hurt at the upper end of your list. No primary care shadowing/clinical experience? How many times did you take the MCAT?

I have taken the MCAT once, but I'm thinking about taking it one more time. I do not have any primary care experience, but my volunteer position is in the surgical department where I see the doctors interact with the patients.

That was not my implication! Do not do that. It is a fine score. Work on the weak parts of your ap, not the strong ones.

What would you say is the weakest part of my app? I am choosing not to do research due to focusing more on interacting patients in a hospital/clinical setting. Maybe some more EC's or leadership?

Have you validated a commitment to service? Can you speak knowledgeably about a physician's role in society? Have you seen what the majority of physicians do each day? Can you convince us that your gifts will be maximized by medical school for the benefit of others, particularly the ill or infirm? If you can do these things, research is icing on the cake, without them, you still have nice numbers and should get in somewhere (with a good list).
