Hey Y'all,

I'm currently in the process of rounding out my school list while I wait for my AMCAS to get verified. I have begun prewriting my secondaries to the schools I have already chosen with the hopes that I can submit them as soon as I get verified. Any additional recommendations for schools would be really appreciated.

  1. cGPA and sGPA 3.8
  2. MCAT score - 523 (130/132/131/130)
  3. North Carolina Resident
  4. White male from upper middle class family.
  5. Attend Brigham Young University for undergrad.
  6. Clinical Experience- 250+ hours working as an EMT on campus. 50 hours volunteering in the ICU at the local hospital.
  7. Research experience - Over 500 hours of research experience in 2 labs on campus. No publications, but one is currently under revision and will soon be published. I feel weakest here. I did not get a letter from my PI because I felt that I could get stronger letters from other places.
  8. Shadowing Experience - 66 hours of shadowing among various specialties. The longest was with an ENT who specialized in reconstructive facial surgery. I spent 20 hours with him.
  9. Non-clinical volunteering - 300+ hours volunteering with Camp Kesem, a non profit who helps children that have parents with cancer. 700+ hours of volunteering in various ecclesiastical roles in my local congregation.
  10. Miscellaneous
    1. Teaching - 150+ hours tutoring for the MCAT with Altius test prep. 100 hours working as a TA for anatomy and physiology. I was just hired to work as a part time professor of anatomy and physiology at LDS business college. I will be working with students that are completing associate degrees and medical assisting and medical coding training programs.
    2. Other - Spent 2 years as a proselyting missionary for the LDS church in Sacramento California speaking spanish. I held various leadership positions where I was responsible for supervising groups of missionaries and providing weekly trainings for them.
    3. Hobbies - I'm very interested in politics, religions, and public health. I love being outside in the mountains and love to hike.
School List - These are the schools that I have applied to so far. I'm interested in getting involved in public health and working with the under privileged. I'm currently doing research on my own, but will be leaving the country for 2 weeks on Saturday and would really like to have a good list of schools so that I can hammer out their secondaries. I applied a little later than I wanted (July 7th) and am hoping that by getting secondaries done quickly that I can still be considered at the beginning of the selection process.

All North Carolina Schools (UNC, ECU, Wake Forest)
Case Western
John Hopkins
Loma Linda
Penn
UCSF
Uniformed Services University

Schools that I am considering (It's a little top heavy)
Yale
WashU (I'd have to take calculus)
Siani
Mayo
NYU
Rochester
Einstein

Thanks for all the help! I really appreciate it.

I think your list so far is great. You have a strong application so you can afford to aim high! You'll probably receive IIs and acceptances from at least one of the NC schools and so you should only apply to schools out of NC that you would consider attending over the super cheap IS tuition at UNC/ECU etc.

I think all the schools you are considering would be within reach for you. If you're looking for other schools to add, consider:
Harvard
Stanford
UChicago
Vanderbilt
Duke
UCLA
Cornell
UMich
UCSD
Emory
USC (Keck)
Miami
BU
Tufts

You look great for top schools! Did you already graduate undergrad?

15ish of the top 20
5-7 mid tiers
your state schools

Yes, your research is a little light, but it's adequate and shouldn't be the thing that keeps you out at top schools.

Guys, thank you for the encouraging words! I'll take a look at a few more top 20 schools and add them to the list.

I'm graduating in December and will be teaching and tutoring until I head off to medical school!

Second what @anonymoose1640 says about the NC tuition. I also live in NC and am really happy that UNC is such a great school with low low tuition.

You should be applying places where you would go above UNC/ECU.

I suggest:

Harvard
Wash U
Yale
Stanford
U Chicago
U Penn
U VA
U MI
U VM
Ohio State
Jefferson
U IA
UCSF
UCLA,
U Cincy
Miami
Albert Einstein
Tulane
Loyola
Emory
BU
USC/Keck
JHU
Mayo
Pitt
Northwestern
NYU
Vanderbilt
Columbia
Sinai
Cornell
Duke

It's not common for someone with stats this high to get turned away from UNC who is an NC resident.

UNC is a high end medical school, it's not some the typical generic State U. It also has absolute dirt cheap IS tuition. I would factor that in when making an OOS list. Would you really turn down UNC for the Einstein's and Rochester's of the world when you consider the enormous cost differential? If not, then remove them. As long as you apply to UNC Brody and Wake you can be more selective with which schools you give consideration OOS
