cGPA 3.83
sGPA 3.74 - upward trend
MCAT: 519 (130/127/131/131)
Nevada resident, white male. I did my first two years at a local community college and have since transferred to a Nevada state university.
Clinical experience -
-Advanced EMT in busy 911 system for last 3 years. All of my "free" time is spent at work. I'm sure this looks bad as the rest of my EC's aren't very impressive.
-130 hours shadowing (neurologist/endocrinologist/critical care) I should have a lot more by the time I apply this summer. The neurologist I shadow is awesome and I get to learn a ton.
Research Experience -
- 1 1/2 year in neuroscience laboratory.
- First author review submitted and under review
- Lots of data, proficient in pcr / western blot / immuno / EEG / minor rodent surgery (EEG implants).
- Ended on somewhat bad terms with PI. My original goal was MD/PhD, so despite massive incompatibility between me and my PI, I stuck it out for a year and a half (~25 hours a week). After some more issues I decided I couldn't do it anymore. Due to my location it is proving very hard for me to find any other neuroscience laboratories, so I've decided to apply MD only. I'm not sure how to explain my lack of a LOR during the application / interview process. Please let me know how you think this affects my chances.
Nonclinical volunteering
500 hours with nonprofit search and rescue organization with and emphasis on elderly patients with Alzheimer or other forms of dementia.
Other Extracurriculars
TA for a introductory neuroscience course, TA for EMT-B course, Physics tutor, I compete in powerlifting, am an avid rock climber and working on starting an "outdoors" club at my university.
Tentative School List
- I would love to get into a New York school (most of my family is there), but I realize I don't have the strongest application (EC's).
