my extracurrics are ok: i have 200 er volunteer hours, serious clinical research for about 3 months, acknowledged in a paper but not an author, part-time teacher for 3 yrs, some other basic stuff but honestly not too mind-blowing.

how much of a reach are these schools?
columbia
yale
nyu
mount sinai
baylor
stanford
cornell
northwestern
johns hopkins
U of Penn

those are the top-20 schools i'm interested in

Bolded are going to be tough with only 3 months of research.

thanks for the insight.
i figured as much.
are they even worth applying to?

THIS

top schools of these brands look for student with extensive research background (I am talking publications to back them)

If you are a top 20 chaser, with that MCAT you could be, and you NEED to go to a top 20, take a year or so off, work for NIH, get 3+ pubs, apply, and send me post cards from hopkins

One year at the NIH isn't going to yield 3+ pubs, but I like the optimism. First of all, good luck getting into the NIH with no research experience. Second, you're still going to have trouble getting into a top 20 with only one year of research experience anyway.

Are you in med school? You're sdn profile indicates pre-med. Well the OP has a 3.9 science GPA and a 36 MCAT--thus if he applies to the top 20 schools in the country he has a very strong chance at getting accepted at a few of these top 20 schools. A 36 on the mcat is roughly in the 96th percentile...pair this with a 3.9+ GPA OP has a great chance of getting into SOME of the top 20 schools. Not everyone who gets into the top 20 schools in the country have done bench research for 4+ years, and have first author articles in Nature. To the OP I think you have a great shot at getting into several of the top 20 schools in the country with your stats--if you need verification on this just look at the most recent MSAR. It certainly is not a waste to apply to these schools!! Don't let some pre-med that probably has lower stats than you to sway where you apply!

I agree with the last post. I think your chances are good at any of those schools. Yes, many are research-heavy schools, but as long as you have been exposed to some research I think you will be fine. I've heard of some people with similar stats have even less research experience and get in. Throw some mid-tiers in your list (5 or so) and you should be good.

If you have the money to burn, apply to all of'em. If you need to be choosier, maybe whittle it down to 5ish. They are definitely reach schools without more of a research background, but your numbers are there, so why not try.

Apply to lots of mid-tiers and your state schools as well, of course.
