Hello everyone! I am a Canadian citizen, but finishing my undergraduate degree at a large, reputable US institution in a state that accepts a lot of Canadians to their MD schools (relatively speaking) and DO school. I wrote my MCAT in September and foolishly applied to one school (my home institution) and was complete at the end of October. Unsurprisingly, I did not get much love.

My stats: 3.93 cGPA/3.9 sGPA, 509 MCAT (only written once and no section below 125).. I reckon I can do much better because I wrote it on a whim and did not even finish one entire full length in one sitting during practise.. I'd rather not rewrite however, and I am happy with my score.

EC:
  • 350 hours volunteering in a hospital in 2 different departments (very involved, post-op care, taking blood pressures, admitting etc.).
  • 100+ hours of shadowing across 3 different specialities
  • Executive position at one of my school's largest club.. very involved and planned various volunteer events and lots of community outreach... 200+ hours
  • 1+ year of research in basic science.. no pubs or anything, but I am still familiar with various lab protocols.. I do not enjoy research very much.
  • Competitive sports my entire life.. I have won various awards and competed in intramural sports my entire 4 years.
  • Coached a youth sports team
  • Worked part time my entire undergraduate years
  • Tutoring
Various other community service events that total 150+ hours that I can talk about... and many other hobbies.

My plan is to apply the very first day that applications open up this year and to mention what happened this year if I am asked about it in the secondary applications (I was oblivious to the effects that a late application can have). Since my last application I have maintained a 4.0 GPA in my senior year taking 3+ upper level science courses per semester. I started 2 new volunteer activities and I am still involved in all of my old activities.

Please give me advice about being a re-applicant. I hope the schools understand that I am a Canadian citizen and that med schools here are very competitive and it is kind of expected that most people are re-applicants.

You're fine for any of the DO schools that take internationals, especially MSUCOM and UNECOM.
Try the MD school at your UG school; otherwise, it's hard for me to get a take on advising internationals for MD schools.
Thank you Goro I appreciate it, and I plan on applying to all the DO schools that accept Canadians. Also, I just have a specific question. I know that my home institution takes a lot of Canadians because I personally know 10+ that got in last year. I’m asking if the re-applicant status is going to hold me back in particular or do you think it won’t affect me too much? Once again thank you.

Especially considering how late I was this year.

If being late was your only sin, then yeah, it's worth applying again. But over the past year, I expect that your app should have still improved

Yes of course I understand that. I took 5 courses per semester + 1 lab per semester and maintaining a 4.0. I also started 2 additional volunteer activities while continuing all of my old activities. Is that considered significant improvement? I do not want to sound arrogant in any way, but I really do believe applying so late was my biggest flaw. Once again I know I am taking your time and I appreciate your help.

Hi, Could you please tell me which state accepts a lot of Canadians? thanks
