Hi, I am a 4th year medical student interested in going to a 3 year EM program in or around NYC. I've been on a bunch of interviews at the 3 year programs in NYC and wanted to get others take on which programs offer the best training and job opportunities after graduation. The programs to which I'm referring to are NYHQ, Methodist, North Shore, Staten Island, Maimonides, and Beth Israel. I just wanted to get others take on which of these programs you think offers the best all around training and has the most marketable residents after graduation in terms of job opportunities. Thank you in advance for the replies.

The great thing about EM is that, basically, you're well trained wherever you go. A four year program won't hire you as an attending out of a three year program -- no matter which one it is. At least, not four year programs in the city. The good news is that after a year as an attending, you can apply for those jobs. So you're at that disadvantage (which i don't think is a particularly large disadvantage, having gone to a three year program myself) no matter which 3 year you take. Then it depends on where in the city you want to be. Queens, Manhattan (Downtown), Long Island, Staten island, Brooklyn or Manhattan (East Village). They're all competitive secondary to location so I'd say go, see which you like and just rank 'em all. If you can't decide which sounds better, base it based on the part of the city you want to live in. They'll all train you. Variations lie in patient population mostly -some have many more foreign language speakers than others, so weigh how much you mind using language lines. They're all good. You can't go wrong. I'm at one of them, and I have friends at all the others. I'm confident in all of our abilities. We all got jobs we wanted and are excited about. Our weaknesses vary by location... but there is no perfect program. Isn't that good news? You can't make a bad choice. PM me if you have ?'s.
