Hello,

Just recently got my MCAT score back and wanted some advice on my school list. Looking to apply to 14-15 schools. Was going to add a couple of DO schools, especially Western-Lebanon, but do not have a LOR from physician so am probably just going to forget about it.

Oregon Resident
33Q ( V:11, P:10, B:12) 3.9 cum, 3.94 sci (4.0 in undergrad. Only grades less than A are from dual enrollment high school courses.)

Just okay EC's. Going to be brief.

1.5 years of hospice respite volunteering
1 year of community volunteering
1 year of tutoring high school student
25 hours shadowing
2 months low income elementary tutoring (funding was cut)
Summer leadership position at University
1 year leadership position in student group
President's List all terms
Minor award
Part time retail job
NO RESEARCH

Do not have any need to go to a top school. Really looking for a school with good community involvement.

One last piece of information. I can not apply to schools in New York, Florida, or Iowa. Any suggestions would be great. Do not really know what schools are considered safeties or low tier since many schools have so many applicants.

Colorado prefers to see way more clinical experience than you have and seems to have a bias toward those of nontraditional age. Loyola has a humanistic focus and seems to prefer those with some years of dedicated service to the poor. Indiana will ask about your strong state ties.

Side comment, though not solicited: Your shadowing is on the sparse side, with about 50 hours being the average listed. I suggest you continue to gain hours and advise schools of it though update letters. Your clinical experience and teaching are solid, though.

It is because my significant other will be help supporting me and is in another profession that has difficult to obtain licensing in these states. Most of the other states we could just move and fill out a little paper work.

Thank you letting me know about the shadowing. Do you have any other school suggestions that I could look into?

Maybe check out UWisconsin, UNebraska, Rush, Oakland, Wright, SLU, UMinn, UCincinnati, Arizona, all of which have a decent OOS matriculation rate (>15%). Wisconsin asks for state ties but is apparently happy if you have a reason for wanting to locate to the midwest.

Are you applying to dental schools, too?

Haha no I forgot to change that. When I joined this site as a freshman I was pre-dental but changed my mind at the end of the year. Thanks, I will take a look at those schools.
