I didn't do as well as I wanted on my Step II CK. When do programs find out how an applicant did on Step II...before or after the match? Thanks much

If you told ERAS to automatically release an updated USMLE transcript to each program when you were setting up your account...well, then they knew before you. Go to your myeras account and look at where it has the list of all the program on the dropdown menu. There you'll be able to see which programs downloaded which parts of your file (LORs, transcript, etc.). Well, if it has your USMLE transcript list twice, then they probably already have your scores.

THanks dc2md. On my eras I did NOT authorize to retransmit scores when they become available. So now what does that mean in terms of programs getting the step II score. Will it be before or after the match? Thanks again

After you release your scores, it will be availble to programs to be downloaded after 36-48 hours. You can track it; i mean when scores became available to be downloaded and when programs downloaded your scores by Using "Application Tracking" tab on ERAS.

I would say the problem is though, programs know you took the boards on such-and-such a date as you put in your ERAS application. And when you do release, they'll know what date you took them so you can't tell them you just haven't taken them yet.

I would be interested to hear a PD's take on this but I figured withholding them would be worse than them getting the scores... they know something is up, esp with 3 months left for the match.

This all depends on if you are an AMG or IMG. American medical graduates typically don't need their step 2 CK scores before the match. IMGs are pretty much required to have them by rank order time. Program directors don't want to take the risk of match with an IMG that then fails the CK later and can't get their ECFMG certificate until after July 1st. The pass rate for IMGs on CK is much lower than AMGs.
So as long as you don't release the grades to the programs, they won't get them. If you're an IMG, you'd better release them no matter what the passing score is. If you're an AMG and think the passing score will hurt your chances, don't release them.

Be very careful and read up on your program through their website, FREIDA, etc.

I know that in EM a lot of programs specifically state they will not rank candidates until they have Step II CK scores. This means that it taking 4-6 weeks to get scores, and ROL due by 2/21, you better have taken the exam by very early January. Otherwise you could find yourself out in the cold looking in and not being ranked by programs.

nowadays some progs dont rank img without a good s3 score if they want a h1 visa. and u pretty much cant get an iview with just a s1 score if ur img🙂

Even so, PDs are protected by the NRMP. If an IMG does not have ECFMG verified status by the ROL deadline, the NRMP will automatically withdraw them from the match.

Agreed.

Not unless it was high enough and your specialty is not that competitive. I got 11 interviews with only Step 1 and Step 2 CS in psych this year.

But, lots of programs told me that they would not give me an interview until they saw my Step 2 CK scores. Now that they are in, I'm going to call them back.

granted. but im guessing u probably dont need a visa🙂

i hope more pour in as ppl start cancelling and u get ur s2. otherwise im sure 11 is way more than enuf for psych. may the force be with u🙂

If you choose not to release your USMLE scores, when should/must you do so?

I forgot to release my Complex PE score and was called by one of my programs to see if I could release the result. They obviously knew I had taken it in august because of my app, and I am sure it looked kind of scary for them not to have a result back.

I'm wondering if programs will eventually know your Step 2 CK score. Do you have to submit it to them once matched? Or just as long as they know you passed it minus the score? Cuz I don't see myself matching my Step 1 score at all (maybe time investment🙄). I'd kind of hate to be looked down upon because Step 2 wasn't as hot as Step 1.

That's exactly what I meant. If you chose not to release the subsequent scores, when are you suppose to release them (I assume beyond Feb. 21st)? Or do you do nothing and they automatically get transmitted at some point after the rank lists are due or the match?

release them before you start residency! they CANNOT be sent automatically without your approval, otherwise they wouldn't have that option in ERAS.

When you apply. You can't change what you did later.

You can go to ERAS and resubmit your USMLE transripts with the new scores, can't you?

Yes, that is true. It is easy to do and you can track which programs have downloaded it.

Agreed.

Forgive my ignorance, but what and when is the ROL deadline?

Heidelberg,
ROL= Rank Order List
This is the list of the programs you interviewed at and in order of your preference. This year's deadline is 2/21 at 9 pm EST. Candidates must have submitted their list on the NRMP website by that time in order to be processed, and IMG/FMG candidates (i.e. those requiring ECFMG certification) must have the steps completed with scores. Programs also have ROL, but I do not know their deadline.

Thanks! The acronyms are always more obvious once someone explains them

If I graduate in Nov. (a few years from now) I should have the ECFMG certificate by Feb., just want to plan a bit ahead to make sure everything goes as smoothly as possible.

So is there any pro/con to releasing your Step 2 scores now if you chose not to release them prior to the ROL deadline?
