I wouldn't say I'm an alcoholic, but damn my alcohol use has gone up dramatically this year. Is this normal?

To make this thread more fun, post what you're currently drinking. Earlier today, I was having an old fashioned

Definitely. MS-3 is stressful, much more than MS-1/MS-2 IMHO. And a Miller Lite.

Ok Don Drapper

my med school partying probably went 4>1>3>2.

first year was awesome cause I roomed with some upperclassmen who partied all the time.

fourth year was like the greatest year of my life for many reasons.

third year had some great times, namely the 3 months of neuro/psych where it was offshore and chest high almost everyday during the autumn in socal and i surfed 3x a week.

second year blew.

lagunitas pils

I drank and partied harder in 3rd year during those few opportunities to blow off steam than at any other point in my life thus far.

Oh, and Cream Soda

If this ends up being true for me, I will die.

Protein shake. Brah.

Do you ever feel guilty about your drinking?
Do people tell you to cut back on it?
Do you ever need alcohol in the morning as an eye opener?
Forgot the last question...

I drank more during second year. Step 1 was more stressful than any part of third year so far.

Not drinking now but I prefer bourbon served neat.

I'll be sippin dat sizzurp (generic name: promethazine) tonight, namsayin?

(Just kidding. My favorite beer is a Blue Moon, my favorite liquor is Jaegar. One of my friends told me that such choices make me a homosexual, but I'm not sure why.)

You've got the presence of mind to be aware, and concerned. Why not talk with a psychiatrist instead of strangers on the internet? If it bugs you . . . hey—What do you think?

C: have you ever tried to cut back?
A: Have you ever been annoyed about others' criticism of your drinking?
G: have you ever felt guilty about your drinking?
E: have you ever needed an eye-opener in the morning to feel better?

At least that is how we were taught the CAGE screening.

CAGE questions have low predictive value when applied to physicians.

Lil Helper IPA from Mother's Brewing

Then some bourbon

Why is that? I thought alcoholism/substance abuse was more prevalent among physicians than the general population.

Was crushing hard on Lagavulin 16 last year (brought 4 bottles from home), but the last bottle I bought here was absolute ****e.

Glenlivet 18, since it's all I have right now.

In MS-1 I only drank socially, now I only drink alone. Make of that what you will.

I love me some DT. With all the overtime I've been putting in, I've bought way more than usual...

You disappoint me >< correct answer was "scotch"

Went to the package store and they had some Dogfish Head World Wide Stout in the fridge. This stuff is delicioius and amazing- at 15-20% ABV (it varies by batch) it's one and done. Hence why I won't be posting for the rest of the night.

Shirley Temple, but only when I'm raging really hard.

Have you ever thought of cutting down?
Have you felt annoyed by people who criticize your drinking?
Have you ever felt felt guilty about their drinking?
Do you need an eye-opener or nightcap?

I don't mean to be the buzzkill in this thread but having colleagues who have had problems with alcohol I feel obligated:

Drinking is fun. We (mostly) all enjoy it.

Drinking is an escape. Bad test, horrible day, life change? A drink makes it more palatable.

Drinking is a reward. Birthday, paper published, baby, wedding? Have a drink, enjoy!

Drinking is also a bad thing. Some people can't control it. Sure, alcoholics are the smelly people you see on the street. Just have a drink or two when you get home from work. It's quite nice. Have a drink post-call. It helps you sleep. Can't sleep after work? Have a glass of wine. A glass won't cut it? Maybe two. Welp, there goes the bottle. Friends out after work? Let's have some drinks. I'm drinking more than they are, maybe they won't notice, who cares. Ugh, at home. Still not asleep. I'll have a night cap. Wake up hung over? I'll tough it out. Trashed on the weekends/days off. Eye opener to get me out of bed.

Guys, if you think you're having a problem, ask for help early. You don't need AA. You don't need to stop drinking. Just don't let it get a hold of you. I've seen too much talent wasted because of this.

I'm sorry, but any 'bar' with red label in it needs to be retired. That piss poor excuse for a whisky should be banned.

Edit: I can be a peniscephala. You're clearly proud of your bar, and you should be happy. I'm just snooty.

and tonight a Golden Cadillac. Usually it's a Negroni though

Would you prefer the blue label on top of the bar?

Unfortunately my black label bottle, which I actually use for mixed drinks is too big for that section of the bar.

Nope. It's time to retire that word as well. You're not a 12 year old girl.

Nope. Nope. 30+ year old man.

No need to be so dogmatic.

Red label, while I agree, is a horrible whisky, has its place. If I go to a bar and order a scotch and soda and the scotch they have is red label, instead of some other "scotch," I at least know the quality of the scotch. Later, I go to a shadier bar that serves scotch and soda out of the "clear plastic bottle of scotch," I am left wondering the quality. True, my friend, it may have no place on a bar of your choice, but then again, perhaps he is keeping it there to have a scotch flavor to drinks that don't need it. In any case, I am a gold fan, which, evidently, doesn't exist anymore. So I will drink my last bottle of gold, by myself, or with select friends, because I can never get another.

I grew up on black label.

hehehe...I think the blue is a crime in every sense of the word. For the price, there are far superior whiskys to be had. I'm not reprimanding you, I'm envious of you. You have a beautiful journey of discovery and growth ahead of you.

Hehe don't buy Blue in the us. I agree it's not worth the cost. Happened upon that one on St. Thomas, on sale no less. Still learning scotch, though. But haven't found too many other blended scotches that I like outside black. Would love some suggestions though.

Neusu, thx, and you are welcome anytime.

Btw, you should see if they have a totalwine in your state. You should be able to pick up Gold there.

Agreed.. This is how you buy Whisky. Foreign currancy. Duty Free. In the US it's WAY too expensive (except in one local bar where I can get a glass for $12)

I built my scotch collection this way.

Agree. Each person needs to know their tendency for addiction.

Like I said, I grew up on black. Quite literally. Crates of the stuff used to come in for 'functions', so I am very partial.

That said, if you have the $, single malt is the way to go. There is no right or wrong. No, wait, that's incorrect, there are plenty of wrongs but there is no one right.

What I'm craving right now:
25 Glendronach
31 Laphroaig
Pre-80s 32/36 Highland Park
Pre-90s 12 Springbank
12 Saint Magdalene

I'll forgo the subtleties of my last post..

You're all alcoholics in waiting, just look at the numbers.

I advise if you're having control issues this early in your life to seek help before it becomes problematic for you.

Or even if it isn't, but you're concerned? ASK FOR HELP. It is neither a sign of weakness nor is it committing to anything. All medical schools and residency programs have counselors that you can talk to for free, anonymously, off the record. It's far better to ask for help than need it..

Disclaimer: I've been the 1) med student 2) resident watching a friend go through this;

Agreed. Now go preach elsewhere.

I know a couple of classmates who I strongly suspect are going to become alcoholics (if not already) before they finish residency. They've made fools of themselves plenty of times in public, but everybody treats it like a joke and attributes it to having "too much fun." Personally, I think there's something more insidious going on, but what can you do? I don't know them well enough to say anything about it, and they're kind of jerks anyway.

That being said, I know other classmates who love to brew beer and drink a mild amount of alcohol on the weekends. I don't think they're going to become alcoholics at all.
