Hi all,

Someone told me about a recent 4 year MBBS program in England?!? has anyone heard of it? which University is it in?

This is for Ocean11 and anyone else interested in the 4 year program in England...

It's offered through a collaboration between Warwick and Leicester Universities...it's called the Leicester-Warwick Medical School...

The 4 year program is designed for grads of Biological Sciences, in particular the molecular biosciences, such as Biochemistry, Genetics, Molecular Biology etc. It is assumed that you will have a good understanding of Biochemistry, Genetics, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology and Research Methods. It is assumed that your course will have contained little study of social sciences.

I just copied that last paragraph right from their website, and the address is:

http://www.lwms.ac.uk/curriculum/curriculum.htm

Once you get to that page, click on whichever program you're interested in (4 year or 5 year).

Some points of note: They want a 2:1 or 1st class honours degree, which is roughly equivalent to a North American 78% to 82% (that's the minimum they want), and no MCAT required. You have to apply through UCAS (the UK college and university application service)....website for that is www.ucas.ac.uk

Applications are due in the fall.

Happy hunting!!

there are actually several 4 year programs in england. most do not take american students. oxford does take foreign students. i applied and it turned out i couldn't practice medicine in california if i had the degree from oxford (weird...i know) so withdrew my ap. you might want to do some more research on it. it's possible i got bad info on it, but that's what the people at the medical board of california told me even after i questioned them on it a couple of times. good luck!

These are GEP courses - Graduate Entry Programme. Basically you need to already have a degree, and most unis ask that it's in Biological Sciences or something closely related. They are very competitive and still relatively new, though those that are running don't seem to be having any problems.

Leicester-Warwick and St Georges Hospital Medical School were the first ones, I think. Plenty of other unis have them now, Birmingham (where I am) is starting in Sept this year (and we call is GEC just to confuse people 😛)

Some unis ask you to take the GAMSAT which is an Australian admission exam as well as having a first/2.1 undergrad degree.

Competition is stiff - you need to be really good! Also, I'm not sure how many are open to non-UK citizens.

For more info go here: http://microbios2.mds.qmw.ac.uk/vbul/
You need to look at the Mature Students forum really, but Admission will also help.
