Once the scholarship has been awarded, in my case, by the Navy, can you switch the amount of time you wish to serve? I haven't signed anything yet, but am thinking about doing the 3 year as opposed to the 4 year and was told paperwork will be ready for me to fill out in about 2 weeks. I called my recruiter and she said she'd get back to me but shes always a few days late. I've decided I'm going to do this, after much research, on SDN and off - contacting Navy dentists who have served, and Navy dentists in the program. It is my opinion that the pros outweigh the cons and the four year sacrifice is something I'm willing to do. I respect the military and believe its in my best interests (you can visit the predental forum and check out the HPSP threads started by others if you feel like I'm an idiot and haven't thought this through, 😉 ). If I can't do the three year, than I suppose I'll do the four, but does anyone know if its possible for them to do this? If so and my recruiter tries to tell me differently, who else should I contact?
I've never heard of a dentist dying or fighting in combat and if I have to be deployed, then it will be an experience of a lifetime.

If you have not signed, you can change from a 4 year to a 3 year, but you may have to go through the application process again next year. This is a budgeting issue (and a headache). Your recruiter will not like it, but if that is what you are willing to sign for, tough.

Thanks for the reply, my recruiter is a little slow with things as usual...I still don't understand why the military delays and slows things when they are in a desperate need for dentists.
