Do any of the residents have any advice on 4th year electives? What electives helped you as an ER inetrn or what electives you wish you would have done?

I'm just finishing my 4th year and going to be an ER intern shortly. The 4th year elective that has helped me the most was a cardiology month. I'm much more comfortable with reading EKGs now. It was at a county hospital where we would have to read a whole stack of 100-200 every day. My cardiology fellow would hand me a stack, I would do a preliminary read, then he'd go through and check my work. Pretty cool way to learn.

I think there is a section on this at the bottom of the FAQ

Thanks generalveers, I scheduled cardio, radio, anesth, plus my ER electives.

Try the Emergency Medicine Ultrasound Elective at UCI. You get handed an US machine and go hog wild in their ED scanning everything. Gallbladders, kidneys, aortas, etc. Attending who runs it is pretty damn good too. You pretty much set your own schedule, so if you plan it for summer its a pretty good time.

Good luck.

I would think tox would be very helpful, and outpt ortho.

Hey, i have and EM AI scheduled at my school in August, but i was wondering if anyone had suggestions for an elective in NYC or maybe someplace warm--but not CA (i'm thinkng places i would want to live, so I'd want to ask for letters from these places)

I am a big fan of the U/S elective at UCI also. It was a great experience and I feel ahead of the game as an intern when it comes to ultrasound.

We have a very good Tox program at UTSW (Dallas). The faculty are great and the hours are cush for the student rotation.
