I searched the forum and couldn't find any answers on this. How is housing handled during 4th year externships? Is it typically provided by the program you are externing at, or are we as students responsible for finding housing in the different cities we do rotations in? Thanks ya'll!

I know at Scholl students are responsible. However, I will be at DMU next year, and I have no idea. I am guessing we are responsible. I know when my brother did his (for pharmacy) he stayed with relatives and friends all over the country. The podiatrist I shadowed said that he knew people that slept in their cars, ha. I hope it doesn't come done to that, but I would suggest keeping in touch with friends and family, so you have a place to stay.

How did those of you with children work it out? One of my kids will be in kindergarten next year when I start externships

craigslist has a lot of random sublets... but who knows who you would be living with.

DMU students have no obligations to their school 4th year and most people do not maintain a place in Iowa.

Some externships come with housing, others do not. This will be listed on the CPME website for each program.

I know someone who based their externships on which ones provided free housing.

NYCPM has over half the year to spend back at school so it makes sense to maintain an apt in the city. I paid for a place to stay at one externship plus 3 months for a rental car. and rent in NYC. It is hard but possible.

^Yep... click on clerkship handbook. Always contact the program to confirm housing as soon as you are selected and scheduled for the rotation. For the programs that don't have housing, most can at least suggest housing or offer residents who will let you rent a room (talk to the MedEd dept or residency coordinator).

I am from Scholl and currently on externships. As Feli and krabmas said, some offer housing and some don't. So yes you are responsible for finding your own housing wherever you go, unless it is offered by the program. Some that are "free", may charge a minimal fee ($100....one program that I was going to attend).

Double check and make sure the program still offers free housing. I heard of a program that suddenly stopped offering housing and the student got there and had nowhere to stay. so double check!! Clarify exactly where the housing is and what is provided. The "free" housing may be in the call room in the hospital...lol. Learned that from a program I was considering. Some provide linen, TV, internet, computers, full kitchen, etc. Also, you may be sharing a room with someone, possibly. Where I am now, I have my own private room...dorm. But i brought all my own stuff, so i wouldn't have to worry about anything not being provided.

Also, if you decide to rent from someone, have a backup plan. Because they can back out on you at the last minute...personal experience. 👎

However, I didn't base my choices on whether or not the program offered housing. But your circumstances may be different than mine, of course.

Paulywog: I have children, but they are with their father. So school is not interrupted for them. So if you child is starting school, you may have to travel without your family, if that is an feasible option.

Good luck on your externships :luck:
