I am from Scholl and currently on externships. As Feli and krabmas said, some offer housing and some don't. So yes you are responsible for finding your own housing wherever you go, unless it is offered by the program. Some that are "free", may charge a minimal fee ($100....one program that I was going to attend).
Double check and make sure the program still offers free housing. I heard of a program that suddenly stopped offering housing and the student got there and had nowhere to stay. so double check!! Clarify exactly where the housing is and what is provided. The "free" housing may be in the call room in the hospital...lol. Learned that from a program I was considering. Some provide linen, TV, internet, computers, full kitchen, etc. Also, you may be sharing a room with someone, possibly. Where I am now, I have my own private room...dorm. But i brought all my own stuff, so i wouldn't have to worry about anything not being provided.
Also, if you decide to rent from someone, have a backup plan. Because they can back out on you at the last minute...personal experience.

However, I didn't base my choices on whether or not the program offered housing. But your circumstances may be different than mine, of course.
Paulywog: I have children, but they are with their father. So school is not interrupted for them. So if you child is starting school, you may have to travel without your family, if that is an feasible option.
Good luck on your externships
