Hey there, TN resident (non-URM) here just looking for some input as to what my chances are for receiving interview invites. I'm applying to mostly DO programs, but will be applying to a few MD programs, as well; if anyone has recommendations on schools to target, it would be appreciated. I decided to pursue medicine very late in undergrad, so my grades in upper-level sciences -- genetics, human physiology, microbiology, immunology, parasitology, virology, organic, biochem, etc. -- far exceed my grades in the core prereqs.
Extracurriculars:
* 750 hours as a medical assistant - patient histories, diagnostic testing, imaging/scans, administration of some medication, suture removal (resuming employment in July; took a break to study for MCAT and for a class)
* 50 hours volunteering at a clinic for uninsured/underserved/homeless - checking vitals, histories, scribing
* 150 hours as a biomedical research lab assistant - preparing buffers, cleaning glassware, minor surgeries on mice (no pubs)
* 240 hours Food Bank volunteer - sorting items, labeling cans, packaging non-perishable foods
* Orientation leader for 3 years - won "Leader of the Year" award
* One of 25 students selected for a leadership organization on campus
* School tour guide for 2 years
* SGA senator for 1 year
* Worked for campus rec for 3 years
* Intramural team captain every year
* Hobbies - weight lifting, hiking, snowboarding
Shadowing:
* ~40 hours ophthalmology
* 10 hours family medicine (MD)
* 8 hours family medicine (DO)
* shadowing another family med DO next week and a pediatric MD the week after
