Hey everyone, I am a new member of the forum. Just wanted to post my profile here and get some feedback on my strengths and weaknesses/any potential improvements I can make during my gap year as well as some feedback on my current school list. I am also conflicted about adding on any schools other than my state ones. I would really like to go to one of my state MD schools and am wondering if the marginal increase in admission odds I get from applying to 15 more out of state schools is worth it.

Extracurricular Background:
Significant leadership experience in two different orgs. First one is my fraternity where I was VP and a few other EC positions. Got fantastic leadership experiences from it and did very well among chapters nationally in average number of service hours per member and philanthropy (raised for local families whose children had cancer. Also tutored struggling members for classes. (Total ~500 hours).
Second organization is Dance Marathon (fundraises for Children’s hospitals) where I also served in numerous leadership positions including VP of Finance where I planned fundraising strategy. Managed to grow the organization substantially in 3 years from raising $1500 to raising over $32,000. (toal ~250 hours)
Research experience:
Did research in vascular access lab starting winter of my Junior year. Was accepted to a competitive summer research program where I won an award for my presentation that allowed me to participate in 2021 ASN KIdney Week. Presented the same abstract as the first author at two other conferences. Work in the same lab now full time during my gap year working on new projects. (750 hours so far, expecting 1900 more over next 10 months)
Publications:
Second author in publication for med/high impact journal (Frontiers of Cardiovascular Medicine). Currently in submission process which is what I put on my app.
Clinical experience:
70 hours as caretaker for Grandmother suffering from late stages of dementia. 50 hours so far (expecting 150+ more hours over next 6 months.) working as a volunteer scribe at a rural medical clinic. Also getting to learn and do things like taking vitals, processing samples, drawing up shots, etc. from medical assistants.
Physician shadowing:
~100 hours across various settings and specialties. 70 hours in patient facing (internal medicine, derm, fam med) and 30 hours in specialties (radiology, interventional radiology, pediatric nephrology)
Non-clinical volunteering:
Dance Marathon planning already mentioned. Scattered volunteering through fraternity and Dance Marathon at Ronald McDonald House, local food drives, cleaning up parks and local underserved communities.
Other extracurricular activities:
played intramural volleyball, basketball, and softball, weight train casually
Employment history:
Absentee election clerk during 2020 Runoff and General Election. Basically walked people through the absentee voting process and kept track of applications and ballots (got me lots of communication and conflict management skills with people from different backgrounds including older and underserved populations) (560 hours). Also worked at courthouse in another clerk role (480 hours)
Honors/Awards:
Research conference award mentioned above, nominated by my chapter for an award given by our national fraternity (will know results in a month or so), named “Brother of the Year” by my chapter (if that’s worth anything)
Other:
Numerous engineering projects through classes and professors that focused on solving clinical issues. Most have not moved beyond the conceptual stage. Senior design device was made for a research lab to improve efficiency of their in vitro heart model and was successfully manufactured and installed. Presented on our senior design project on two occasions. Also planning to become involved in face-to-face non-clinical volunteering in the next month or so and continue that once a week throughout the next 6+ months.

It is worth applying to OOS MD schools. You have only 2 instate MD schools and your clinical volunteering hour are low.
Remove U Wisconsin, West Virginia and Virginia Tech since they admit few applicants with no connection to the state or region.
Emory is a reach.
You could add these schools:
Medical College Wisconsin
Drexel
Temple
Jefferson
George Washington
Hackensack
New York Medical College
Albany
