Hello All,

This is a very personal topic for me but I could not find answers on the web. I am currently being treated for depression, and I recently had an incident in which I placed under a 5150 hold. This happened because a family member was mad at me and alerted my doctors as to something that I said, however completely twisting my words to make it seem that I was going to harm someone else, even though I had absolutely no intention of doing so. The said family member felt incredibly regretful afterward because he had no idea as to the consequences, but I could not call him out officially (ie say he lied about what he told the doctors of what I said) because it would greatly damage his career.

I am currently preparing my application for med school and hope to apply within the next few years, and have a pretty strong application, but I am worried that the 5150 hold will appear on my record and will be discovered when the med schools perform a background check. If that is the case obviously it would be a huge red flag for them. I am currently trying to take care of my mental health as best I can, and I feel confident that I can be a successful and empathetic physician in the future. I want to be a psychiatrist so that I can help others like me. Does anyone know if med schools will have access to my medical records when I apply? I am worried because being a psychiatrist is my dream!

Medical schools do not have access to the medical records of applicants. That is protected information.

Ditto. Look up HIPAA. Also just a general consensus, don't mention any of the above in your applications. They will only find out about said incident and condition if you explicitly write about it. They do have access to criminal records though, so as long as you don't have one, you will be fine.
