SO I am applying to a summer research program and the program is designed for people who are interested in pursuing research as a career. I am only going to pursue a MD, is there any ways I can convince them in my application to hire me despite this fact?

An MD can be a path to clinical research. If you are planning to do clinical research (or any research, really) after earning your MD, just tell the program that and explain why an MD was a good choice for you.

I shouldn't have to tell you what to say, but something along the lines of, "I am interested in clinical research, and I considered MD/PhD programs, but I think that the MD in combination with my research background should be sufficient, and it would save me time" would work well. If that isn't true, and you can't make it sound convincing, I would suggest just being honest.

There are lots of MDs that to research. And i'm not talking just clinical. My boss is an Infectious disease specialist who also runs a basic science virology/microbiology lab at the university. her time is split 60-40 in favor of clinical but thats still a substantial amount of non-clinical research work.

I myself am hoping to end up in a similar position so i dont think it would be a problem convicing them that you will benefit from the postion being offered.

I would bet that you could find a few example like the one i described at your school to rbing up as examples of what type pf physician you would like to become.
