Hi there,
I'm new here, and in my time snooping, I've found this place to be an amazing resource. I was looking for some advice on some stuff I've been pondering as the school year starts creeping up-
This year, I'm set to be doing a lot of stuff: I'll be an RA, volunteering 4 hours a week at a free clinic, TAing a large class (possibly), Public Relations Chair for a cultural group, on the Relay for Life Coordinating Board, and as a Director of our school's women in science group, I'll be organizing mentoring programs, outreach and designing more events (at least 10 hours a week). All of these have weekly meetings/events. On top of that I'll be taking a full courseload with Orgo II.
I'm a little worried that if I decide to join a lab this semester, it might be overkill. I've had a excellent summer lab experience, and I was thinking I should hold off on joining a lab at school until the spring, when I have orgo out of the way, and possibly more time to devote to a project. There are several PIs I plan to contact.
I know everyone is different, especially with time management and all, but I wanted to know if it looks like I'm going a little overboard, and if waiting on lab work would be a good idea. Or conversely, if I'm flipping out for no particular reason, and I'm really not any more swamped than the average pre-med.
In additon, I've had a really great time at the free clinic I work at-- plenty of patient time, shadowing doctors, and I genuinely enjoy my work medical recording. This year, I'm also going to get involved in helping out with clinical research projects, and designing wellness classes, as well. I was wondering if it might be a good idea or not to branch out, and try other clinical volunteer opportunities (shadowing? Working at an ER? regular hospital stuff?), or if I'm happy, to simply stay put and devote my time to the clinic?
Thanks so much!
