8 hour o-chem requirement; only 1 lab needed if 2 hours?

I've checked some previous threads on this, but I figured I'd ask the question again in hopes of getting a straight answer.

It seems almost all D.O. schools ask for 8 hours of organic chemistry, with lab. If O-Chem I and II lectures at my university are 3 hours each, and my O-Chem I lab was 2 hour hours of course credit (for a total of 8 credit hours), am I required to also take the second semester of lab? That would give me 10 credit hours. I would rather not take it, as it is a huge time suck, but I will if it's required. I spoke to the pre-med advisors at my university, and they were clueless. So, any ideas? Thanks!

No you don't have to take a second lab if your lab is 2 credit hours... That is what my school has and all the DO/MD schools I applied to accepted it.

Thanks for the help! Anyone else had the same experience? Not that I don't believe you, but I'd just feel a bit more comfortable if the sample size was greater than 1. 😉

I *think* some schools require the full year of lab, which would have put me at 10 credits of ochem as well. Luckily the school I'll be attending accepts biochem for the second semester. You could always email/call the schools you're interested in- then at least you'd know for sure!

I am not sure of that! I think all schools require 2-credit lab of Orgo--not a year... My state school has only 1 Orgo lab that is 2-credit and no one has had any issues getting into med school. In fact, that was my concern as well when I was taking that lab and they (Pre-Health Professions Office) assured me it was not an issue.

Well, that's a bit different. My school HAS two different semester of Organic lab, each worth 2 credit hours. It's not ONE Orgo lab that covers both semesters. Anyone else had this situation?

Mine offered two semesters of two hour labs. I only took one.

And the DO schools you applied to were cool with the 8 hours of credit not equaling a full "year with lab"? Were that any schools that did give you grief over it? So far today, AZCOM and PCOM have told me I need both semesters of lab credit, while LMU said they're okay with just the 8 hours of credit. Confusing!

Never heard a complaint. Then, neither of those schools interviewed me either.

Gotcha. Thanks for the assistance. For what it's worth, ATSU has said they're okay with the one lab. Do you mind telling me which DO schools you applied to? I'd really be interested to know where you got invites, just because I'd know they were okay with your pre-reqs. Sorry if I'm being nosy, but it would help ease my mind!

Click on my MDapps link on the left. It'll default to my rather untimely and failed MD app cycle, but if you click on 8/7/2012 it'll show you the DO cycle.

I ve been admitted to AZCOM with 1 semester of o chem lab-my school offers 2 semesters-with azcom it really depends who you are talking with. The general rule that they told me was that if ACOMAS accepts the units, azcom will accept those too. They even accepted some prerequisites taken abroad..and azcom look at your gpa and mcat for the interview. .they consider your presequisites after..obviously if you missed all of them they would not contact you..but for 1 or 2 no problem..
