I would recommend getting some extra shadowing hours elsewhere. I don't think you would have to get alot but maybe something like 15-20.

Look at the schools you want to apply to and see if they require a letter from a dentist. Many of them do so it could be in your best interest to get a LOR from a dentist.👍

I see on this board a lot that people have tonnes of shadowing hours. My dad is a dentist and I have been working (not volunteer) at his practice for about 5 years by the time I apply. I started off just doing desk work, and now I help sterilize and suction if he is busy. Should I shadow a friend of his and how long would be good enough? I can get 2 LORs from professors I did research with. Should my LOR be from a volunteer organization I have been with for 3 years or should I get one from the dentist (not my dad). Sorry for the long post.

you really need to check with the school's website for LOR requirements. Some schools will be very specific about them (like 2 from science professors who have lectured you before ~ so I don't know if the research LORs would be accepted).

A few schools will require a dentist LOR... although the more common thing I've seen is schools "recommending" a dentist letter (not requiring).... If you happen to apply to one of those schools which require (like Tufts), you will need to set up some shadowing with a non-family member dentist, I think Tufts wants to see 30 hrs minimum and they want it documented in the letter by the dentist.

all the best
