My advisor said not to worry so much about the degree because a lot of schools accept people with solid academics and MCAT scores at the 90 hour point. He gave several good reasons for the logic. Have any of you ever known of a nontraditional student actually getting accepted and starting med school without a degree?

NO, that rule is there for "some" schools but with the plethora of applications that medical schools get from folks with good greades, good mcat, good lors, good ec's, and they will have a degree why take the risk? We had a pre-med session at my medical school this weekend and the adcoms wisely put it this way...why give an adcom ANY reason to put you on the do not interview pile....the competition is fierce so always present yourself in the best light.

I had really wanted to do this but the premed advisor at my school (UW-Madison) strongly recommended against it. Well, actually, she said, "No. You can't. There is no way." According to her, the 90 hr minimum is basically for superfast track wunderkids (and not many of them!) and by the time you get to be our age they expect you to have your bachelor's degree.

I've only seen a couple of people get accepted without a degree...both were just a couple of classes from being done & one has used some med school credits to finish out his BS.

From talking to medical schools, I was told that you need a minimum of 90 credit hours to apply, and you can be accepted, but you need to have a degree by the time you are suppose to enter their school. And I have spoken to over 20 schools and they all have said the same thing. You can also find this information in the Princeton Review book on medical schools, and the AAMC book on medical schools.

I plan to apply with the 90 creidt hours next June, but i will have my degree before it is time for me to enter medical school.

well my advisor said to stop at 90 cr apply to med school and if reject then finish the bachelor degree.

very bad advice. In addition to the fact that people don't get accepted often (if ever) with only 90 hrs, it makes absolutely no sense to stop taking classes.

She clearly doesn't understand how this really works. Don't follow her advice. If you want to fork out $ to see if you can get in early, go ahead, but don't stop taking classes.

Sort of makes you wonder who gets stuck with being the pre-med advisor, doesn't it? Clearly nobody who knows thing one about medical school applications.

Your advisor is correct you can apply with 90 hours, but you still need to finish with a degree. I think she is writing it the wrong way. She should tell you that you can apply to medical school with 90 credit hours, but you must have a degree by the time you matriculate.
