Why? The NRMP states that this is the highest match rate in years..at least for US seniors. Tough year for non US grads, though.

I forgot to mention that part about 13,000 scrambled for 1300 spots. That's what I meant by tough year. I don't know if that's how it normally is, but 90% of those that scrambled (yes, I know it's diluted because there are a lot of FMG/IMG that scramble) will not find a spot and thus will have to do something else for at least a year. That seems like a lot of very well educated people.

True...applicants to NRMP were at an all time high meaning some stiff competition.

i would argue the tough part from looking at the unfilled spots data that we applicants had access to on the NRMP website. 2 categorical surg, 41 path, less than 100 categorical peds and medicine spots...tough indeed.

i don't need stats to tell me it's been a TOUGH year! i know it by heart...hahaha

my friend last year had the same creds as me, I applied to the same programs, got fewer iv's. He couldn't explain it other than, well, it's a tougher year. the match also occurred later this year so a little more torture waiting and scrambling for papers. and it just had to fall on Holy Week...

For IMG/FMG there does not always seem to be much logic to it. I applied to the same number of programs this year and last year. last year got one invitation to interview. This year got 13 interviews. The only thing I can attribute to the difference is my personal statement - every interview commented on my unique PS. But seriously some of it seems to be luck of the draw for IMG/FMG's.

I find the increase of AMG's applying to FP interesting

if you read the article closely, it says that of the 13000 that scrambled, 5000 did not complete there registration for the match, meaning almost half of the ppl looking for positions outside of the match, were never included in the match. Meaning only 8000 were NRMP registrants that failed to match. Also, of that 8000, only 883 were US seniors.
