Alright, short story.
After a orthondontist appointment where...something (Possibly something called Pearl Etch.) was dropped on my lip and left a small burn on my lip, a bit of my lip is stuck to my gums...help!

Long story...
The assistant applied the...stuff to my teeth for...whatever reason and a bit dripped on my lip. It just started burning a bit, and didn't hurt too bad. I didn't say anything about, and just wiped it off when the appointment was done. I just noticed a small burn/cut looking area on my lip...didn't think it was a big deal. Apparently though, I missed some. Maybe. I don't know. But now a bit of my bottom lip is stuck onto my gum. It doesn't inhibit moving or anything, but they're clearly connecting where they shouldn't be, and it's very sore.

Now, the real problem: My mother thinks this is an STD, and I'm pretty much grounded now (I'm a 15 year old virgin. My mother has some misconception that I'm a ladies man or something.). I'm not even supposed to be online right now. I just wanted to know if anyone knows what the deal with this is. Maybe if I show her that some of you guys (Who I assume are a reputable source) say that it's not an STD, I'd get ungrounded before my next dentist appointment. Which is in three weeks. I'd also like to know if this problem is fixable (The sore is pretty aggravating), if I can take any medication, or even if it could become a serious issue and if my dentist could be held responsible. Thanks in advance for the help...

Wow! I'm sorry about your experience. I'm also sorry that your mother came to an immediate conclusion based on your sore (which could have been caused by so many factors). I would just look for pictures of Herpes sores on the internet and show her how your sore looks nothing like the pictures.

Hopefully this helps.

Thanks...I'll try that idea.

And just for clarification, there isn't an actual sore...just a sore part of lip.

Hi,

It sounds to me like your orthodontist or the assistant might have accidentally dropped a bit of etching fluid on your lip. The etching fluid is 37% Phosphoric Acid and prolonged contact with mucosa can cause a burn. It's used to etch the enamel on teeth so the orthodontist can bond brackets to it (for braces).

Slight chemical burns like that should heal up by itself in about two weeks.

Of course, over the internet we can't make definitive diagnoses because we can't do a clincal exam or look at your charts.. You should see your dentist for the definitive word and put your mother's worries to rest.

HTH!

SXR:

To untrained eyes, one can not distinguish a herpes lesion with a burnt mark! Plus, if a parent believes that their children is sexually involved, it will be difficult to persuade them otherwise. We all know how parents can be.

Secondly, I can't believe a 15 year old found this place and browses through these forums?! Very ambious, I must say.

Now Phantasia, it will be difficult for us to convince your mother that your accidental burnt mark is a "burnt mark"! I, personally didn't see it happen PLUS I don't have your lips in front of me to examine. Without a solid examination, I don't believe any of us is able to diagnose your lesion!

Sorry about you getting grounded, but nothing we can do here in my opinion!

Good luck!

Thanks Tom...that actually sounds like exactly what it is. This all happened when they were putting braces on...you guys are a great help 😀

Guess I'll just wait it out until it heals...and probably show this to my mom whenever I'm allowed to get online again, thanks!

Well that's why I was sure that no one would offer a diagnosis without an actual picture at the very least, but poor guy he should have some way to allay suspicions for the time being. At least he should have a way to take some heat off of him until he sees the dentist again. Then again when it comes to parents it is usually guilty until proven innocent as I know all too well.

If the dentist says that it is in fact due to an STD, I don't care if his mother sees fit to ground him for the rest of the year - that's her prerogative.

I wonder if he can get an appointment with his family physician or otherwise take a screening test before he sees the dentist again.

sorry dude but your mom probably doesn't know jack...no offense...mom knows best but I seriously don't think you have herpes.
If you had herpes simplex type 1 you would still have a prodrome of fever, blisters, cold sores that recur during stress, UV light exposure, major trauma etc. and even that prodrome would have to occure after the herpes virus has had time to embed itself in the neurons or dorsal ganglion of your spinal cord. Children can get exposed to it from intimate mucous membrane exposure ie kissing but it is seldom serious and would not cause serious illness. Herpes remember is a DNA virus that causes acute skin blisters and infections but it won't kill you or cause your lip to stick to your gums in any fashion.

if you were sexually active then you would get blisters on your balls and penis caused by herpes simplex 2 and that still has asymptomatic symptoms that don't appear upon initial infection. It's only months or years after or extreme sexual activity compounded with trauma, smoking and UV light would the blisters show up. They could (herpes 2) end up on your mouth if you are into rug munching but other than that you are clean dude.
If you are a 15 year old virgin then the most you could have is herpes 1 but that virus won't even glue your lips to your gums.

Heh...no need to convince me that I don't have an STD. I KNOW I don't have one. 🙂

And really, not too much of a need to worry about my mother, she'll realize her mistake in due time...it isn't rare for her to jump to conclusions like this. She did the same thing when I got mono (When I was 13...ridiculous...and later found out it was from someone on the football team.) And again when I was vomiting, she thought I was faking it. Me and my friends even have a running joke about me getting in trouble for getting ill. Eh, she's kinda crazy, but it's okay. As long as I know there isn't anything seriously wrong with me, all is well for now.
