I was filling out the extracurricular portion of my AADSAS tonight and considered entering the text below. I was environmental chair of my fraternity, and basicly the guy who sorted through giant bags of cans to be recycled every Sat/Sun morning whenever I got up. It was a surprisingly active job or wouldn't even bother.

"I served as environmental chair of my house for two years, assuring that any aluminum beverage containers were recycled in a more responsible manner than they were consumed."

Bad idea or good idea?

And what was the other guy who took those aluminum cans and collected money for them... the Environmental Fundraising Chair?

I feel like it may not be best to put something pertaining to that on the application itself, but I feel that in the interview if you have set the stage and the adcoms are not ultra-conservative it could be a good line in that case.

Thanks for the feedback.

I generally consider humor a clear risk, but felt it was subtle and didn't necessarily imply myself as the irresponsible party. I actually spent a lot of hours on this job (imagine the aluminum cans 150 frat guys go through - kegs were not allowed in houses at IU).

I just wanted to hear opinion on how it reads. Every other section of my app contains no humor, and my app is fairly long. I'm thinking it might add a tiny bit of personality/wit.

I'd do it.

Me too. I have a little bit of humor in one or two places on my app. Small things, nothing big. This is the kind of thing that I would put in there so long as it was "safe" 😀

It also depends on the school. Some schools are a bit "stuffy" and may not welcome it while other schools may get a kick out of it.

Don't assume they will: a) Get the joke or b) Assume you didn't consume them in an irresponsible way.

Risky in my opinion.

You are applying to a professional program to one day become a professional. You want your application to sound professional. Adcoms are not your peers. Adcoms are professionals looking for individuals with the potential to one day become a professional.

Did I say the word professional enough?

Showcase your personality on the interview and the personal statement.

I find it subtly funny. But don't do it. Its a risk with an obvious consequence of rejection.

Unless the joke is about your frat brothers consuming large amounts of coke with vodka irresponsibly (implying you're a part of this), then this isn't actually that funny....

agreed..don't think i would mention anything on my app for dental school about drinking...lol

Subtle was the goal, but I took the advice here and removed it.
