i just started a new pharmacy tech job and the staff pharmacist that i work with is almost incompetent - i have experience with pharmacists that are fast and sharp and three steps ahead of everyone

don't get me wrong i have 100% respect for every individual in the health care profession and used to work at a different chain and i love every single pharmacist that i have ever worked for

- she is short and rude with all the patients - and well someone stopped by today with a dicloxacillin suspension prescription for their kid, not having it in stock i told the patient to try cvs down the rd. - he did, as well as 8 other pharmacies in town before coming back the same day to ask us if we could order, being an hour before, the pharmacist told the father (who by this point was completely exhausted and obviously worried sick about his child) to look elsewhere.

- so my question is does dicloxacillin come in a suspension (because she made absolutely no attempt to clarify herself to the patient or to me why they could not order the medication - the order wasn't too late or anything

long explanation for a question, thanks for all your help

You are very judgemental about a person you don't know much about & about whom you have no ability to judge competence.

She may not have the ability to professionally interact with patients or co-workers - but that is a far cry from being incompetent!

Yes - dicloxacillin does come in a suspension, however, not all wholesalers carry it. She may know, like I do, all the other pharmacies in the area who use the same wholesaler. If one can't get it ..... neither can she.

Likewise - if a parent is presenting an rx on Sunday...the drug wouldn't come in until at least Monday afternoon & that is only if it is available. She may not have the ability to check availablity online - or she might - in which case - she might have known it is or is not available.

I'd say - the fact that 9 pharmacies couldn't actually order the drug might mean it is not available in your area & your judgement is not warrented! She may have not been completely clear with the pts father - I can't tell from what you posted. But - she has no responsibility to make herself clear to you. However, you might ask her in a polite manner what was the case with the dicloxacillin suspension rx so you'll know for future reference.

not having it in stock i told the patient to try cvs down the rd. - he did, as well as 8 other pharmacies in town before coming back the same day to ask us if we could order, being an hour before, the pharmacist told the father (who by this point was completely exhausted and obviously worried sick about his child) to look elsewhere.
Something else I find odd about this situation is that your store didn't call around to local pharmacies to see if anyone did have it in stock. It is exhausting for the patient to drive to every pharmacy with a sick kid either in tow or waiting at home.

In the first place, you asked the father to go to other store instead calling and checking with the same chain store of yours...if its not available then refer to other! Atleast that what all other stores do! He wouldn't be going around and exhausted and frustated by hte end of the day. How can that be pharmacist's fault! Must have checked.

One more thing "being short and rude"....... my preceptor with >30years of pharmacy experience mentioned that short and soft techs/interns/pharmacists always get all the crap if its a bad day for a customer or any working behind the bench with insurance or personal issues!😕

about whom you have no ability to judge competence.

i completely agree with you, but what i didn't post is that: those are the opinions of the rx manager and the techs that have been working there for 3 and 8 years, i have been working there for 2 months and at the same time i am working at another chain pharmacy - the reason why i am doing both jobs is because my other job is at a pharmacy that is very fast and there are not many opportunities to learn anything

this new pharmacy is much much much slower (50 scrips is good, 100 is amazing) and the only reason i was hired was so that there would be a tech that could work with her. i didn't believe them when they told me that she was very difficult - because i enjoy working with her - its just every so often she tries to avoid doing work. she leaves anything that doesn't have to be completed for someone/anyone else to finish- she refuses to answer the patients questions, much less talk to them, and tells them to come back when the rx manager is working so that he will answer their questions

And regarding why i didn't call other pharmacies, as soon as i asked her about the medication she handed the prescription back to the patient and told me to tell him to check cvs - i agree if i was at my other store i would have called anyone to find the medication - but how can i overstep her orders - if she gives me explicit directions how am i not to follow them - and she would notice considering this is a small pharmacy and we were doing like nothing, which i understand is the perfect time to check other stores

and i understand she is not at all supposed to clarify anything to me - but this being more so an educational experience, which she knows is why i wanted this job, she usually (by the way she is the nicest person and i love talking to her and she is so sweet) explains why certain procedures are implemented over others

i genuinely apologize if i have offended anyone, i just thought i needed a short explanation as to why i wanted to know whether dicloxacillin comes in a suspension (which is something i will remember for the rest of my life) i think the entire situation is still bothering me

Although I am not sure why a simple drug question like that warrants an attack on your pharmacist, you can find out the answer to your questions through many methods.
Most pharmacies have a computer system containing a database of all drugs that is avaiable. Even if the computer system is at a most obsolete state, pharmacies are require (by law in most states) to have "references" such as drug index and so on.
Another way you can also find out the answer is by going through your school resource and using lexipro or other online references. At home, you can just google it up. It is a "simple" drug question after all.
