Patient has a upper(front) painful tooth. Her right side of the face is swelling, progressively.Right now the face has swollen about 35% of the normal size(on the right side of the face).
Dentist prescribed a anti-biotic every 8hours, and a 600mg of motrin every 6 hours.
Its been 18 hours, but the swelling is incrementing minutely.

The dentist confirmed it is from the tooth, and ruled out a head & neck injury.

Is the patient in any apparent danger?Pls advise.

Antibiotics are a transient solution to the problem, at best. Patient needs to have the tooth extracted and I&D. If the patient is persistent about keeping the tooth, endo and I&D. Should be done ASAP before the airway patency is compromised or cavernous sinus thrombosis occurs.

3 important points here:

1. The treatment for pus (and sometimes cellulitis) is cold steel. Why is the source of the infection (the tooth) still present?

2. This forum is not the place for medical advice. This "patient" should seek help from a qualified health professional.

3. I'm 12-minutes overdue for calling my probation officer. Gotta go.
