I'm currently going for a 2007 match and would like to do military surgery. I was wondering:

1)- How competitive a military surgical residency is when compared to civilian residencies.

2)- The locations of the available surgical programs.

3)- My chances of obtaining a spot as a Carribean Medical student with mediocre board scores - All rotations done in the US and also US born.

I don't think anyone here can give you an answer to 1 or 3 given the year-to-year variation in military match numbers. Try to directly contact a surgery program director for that sort of information.

If you don't already have an active duty obligation, then don't just apply for a military residency out of the blue. At least get something for your time; check into the Financial Assistance Program and the Health Professions Loan Repayment Program.

Better yet, just do a civilian residency, and if you still want to serve, somebody in the military will probably take you on as an attending physician. That way you will be in a better position to dictate terms to the military, instead of vice versa.

If you're thinking about the military because you don't think you can match in the civilian world, then you may want to rethink your plan. If someone can't match out in the 'real' world, then chances are that the military doesn't want them either. Just my two cents.
