Ok I searched & could not find this...
1. How do you know what "cycle" you're applying for? I'm not sure if you go by the year you send your app in, like if you applied this June, would you be applying for the '08 cycle? Or '09 since that's the year you'd be matriculating?

2. Do med students get off for breaks? M1-M4, do they get a Christmas, spring & summer break? I read you may be doing research durign the summer after M1 year if you go to a school that requires a research project. And M3 & M4 summer you're obviously not off since you'll be doing rotations/beginning internship yr, correct? Just curious, I never thought about this before....THanks!

we are smack dab in the middle of the 08 cycle, which began June 07 and ends august 08 when we (hopefully) matriculate.

not sure but i think you only get your first summer off and most people do something med-related then too.

M1 - We got 4 days off for Thanksgiving, 2 weeks off for Christmas, 1 week of Spring break, and then ~ 10 weeks of summer vacation. We also had a few days off here and there for Labor Day, Rosh Hoshanah, Yom Kippur, etc.

M2 - We got 4 days off for Thanksgiving, 2 weeks off for Christmas, 1 week of Spring break, and then ~ 8 weeks of "summer vacation." I spent 6 of those 8 weeks studying for Step 1, though. We also got the obligatory days off for Labor Day, Yom Kippur, Rosh Hoshanah, etc.

M3 - We "technically" get 4 days off for Thanksgiving, 2 weeks off for Christmas, and 2 weeks of summer vacation. In my case, the residents "suggested" that I come in and round on the Friday and the Saturday after Thanksgiving, so I only really got off for Thanksgiving. We got off for Labor Day, but if you wanted off for Yom Kippur or other religious holidays, you had to work it out with your rotation director and your resident. Some people managed to get off, and others didn't.

M4 - Same deal as M3, except now you have interviews scheduled in, so you might have to come in on vacation days and "make up" the days that you missed because of interviews. But this year is generally very relaxed (especially after the match), so vacation time tends not to be an issue.

Each school has an academic calendar that shows the holidays.
