Hi, I'm new to this forum.

Had a few questions about FM.

1. Wondering about the adequacy of community based hospital training for private practice. Is it pretty much variable based on what you want to do in the future?

2. I'm feeling rather dissatisfied with my program, as an intern, is it too early in the year to judge that? & is it too early to think about switching to another program? Or are there a lot of interns who feel this way in FM everywhere.
Seems that a lot of people know the program sucks, ...but not doing anything about it. What would be some ways to improve didactic teaching? ...from those that have been in good programs..

3. Does the program make it or break it based on the seniors and how much they teach you in a comm hospital that is?

****4. Inservice exams - is there any material out there that could be used to prepare? We've not been given any heads up about this...and I believe it's coming up soon.

Thanx for all your input

I'm not sure what you mean about "adequacy" of community based programs. I actively sought out a community based program and avoided big university programs because I wanted an unopposed program with good didactics and I wanted to learn the full spectrum, from OB to procedures to outpatient to hospital.

I think most people who carefully choose a community program looking for these things will find them. I did, and I know there are many similar programs to mine out there.

I'm also not sure what you mean by point #3. I think you get what you put into it, and the more you read and seek out learning opportunities the more you will know when you graduate. But I also think the program has to give you the raw materials, and without that, it's very difficult. You can read all you want, but if you don't have the patient volume and variety of pathology, you can't apply what you learn from books and lectures. And vice versa, if you are so busy all you can do is run from one patient to the next and keep them from dying on your watch with no time to read and study, you are also at a disadvantage.
